I have a continuing problem of marine growth by the speed paddle thru hull. Because the material isn't bronze or brass (I think it's teflon), marine growth occurs which disrupts flow to the speed paddle. So far, the only way I can get it clean is to hire a diver. He thought that the teflon ring should have been painted with something to prevent the growth, but the boat company in Seattle (CSR) said paint won't adhere to that material. Has anyone else dealt with this problem and found a solution ... like making a contraption out of PVC tubing that might make it possible to reach it over the side, ... or something that can be inserted through the thru-hull from inside the cabin and somehow clean the ring. We have a 2006 Hunter 36. My guess is that Hunter saved some construction money by using a lesser expensive material in this application.

pull it out

Pull it out from under the forward floorboard access. There should be a piug attached to it with 2 rings. If you didn't get the plug or don't know how to do it, call your dealer and tell him to show you how. We had a thread last week about this. Check the archives. I pop mine out every time I will be off the boat for more than a few days. Works great and takes only a few seconds. Seriously, the dealer should have shown you how to do it when he checked you out. If you still need help, let us all know and we'll try to help you out. Problem solved! Now give us a hard one! :)

Growth on external ring, not the paddles

Yes, whenever we leave the boat, we pull the paddles and put in the plug that you are describing. Our problem is growth on the teflon (?) ring that makes up the thru hull body.

The problem is the outer housing, not the plug.

I think I'm being misunderstood ... the problem isn't the paddle wheel or the blank plug that we put in, it's the housing outside of that that is flush with the outer hull. It's a ring whose outside diameter is probably about 2 1/4 inches and inside diameter 1 1/4 inches. Marine growth hairs develop on that that impede the flow of water over the paddle when it is installed. CSR, the boat place in Seattle said paint won't stay adhered to that part so they don't paint it when they paint the bottom. Higher priced boats apparently use bronze or brass for the housing.

GPS

Consider just going with a hand-held GPS, unless going offshore. Low maintenance and trouble-free tracking of speed.

The log housing can and should be painted. Have you tried? With proper prep of the surface the paint will adhere just as it does to the hull. seadog69, GPS boat speed is fine for certain things but it cannot provide through the water info which is far more instantaneous and necessary for proper trimming.
