Looking to get a new marine grill for our little hunter 23.5. when I search the website they are pretty pricey and then the stern rail mounting bracket comes on top of that.
Any one know of a place to get used ones?
Or could one build their own from a little portable BBQ.

I got the one we have as a gift. That's a really good way to go. Actually there are several that might work well as a marine grill (Like the Coleman road trip style which would require making a decent mount.) I have to say the new style Magma grills work really well and you can buy all the repair parts you need. The only down side I noted is they don't turn down low enough for me. If you get a used round Magma make sure it's the newer style with the hinged lid. It's a much better grill than the old ones for multiple reasons.
Also if you mount it on a stern rail, be sure to mount it on a vertical tube so it can't rotate over and dump your food overboard.

There are small stand alone BBQ units that use a propane bottle and legs that fold down. I was never comfortable with using them, and they wouldn't last long if stored on the boat, but they are cheap. If you could find a fire resistant mat to place it on that would be good. While we think of anchorages as being calm there are jet skis, water skiers and just plain A-Holes who will give you a wake while you're cooking. I've always liked my rail mounted Magma, which is now 20 years old (And has had all internal parts replaced.) Rail mounted pretty much stay put - which is a good thing. And It's my observation that these units are most hot when the propane bottle is new and as it is used become less hot. The temp control is somewhat adjustable. Add wind and it's a crap shoot.
And there are plenty of folks using portable charcoal grills, so ....
You may find a used Magna but it's likely you'll end up replacing components which will shortly make it less of a bargain than you thought. One year I overwintered a batch of hot dogs on the Magma. Do you really want a used one?

I have just a frame mounted on the railing and use disposable bbq's placed in the frame - very happy with the solution

Two options are either a charcoal magna or a low cost propane. The propane magna sucks and I don't use that verb often. With the lid open,a steak will never cook. With the closed it will be toast in five minutes. Same effect as tossing it dirtectly on red hot coals, black shoe leather on the outside ,raw on the inside. I don't know how they have the nerve to charge so much for such a piece of crap, and I don't use that noun often. Burgers just burst into flames while hot dogs become dust.
I look forward to deep sixing mine as soon as I find a safe mounting method for wonderful easy to control big box store grill. I use my weber grill year round and that baby can be fine tuned to a single degree.
I love to grill but the propane magna takes all the joy out of it.

I have used a small portable propane grill like, you use for a tailgate party. Not mounted, and only used it while at anchor or at the dock. Worked great. Just need a safe place to use it. I placed mine on the slider hatch. My new boat has a marine grill mounted on the stern rail. Works about the same, but it is in the way when sailing. So I take it off the mounts until I am ready to cook. Could just as easily use the portable....much cheaper.

I agree with you on the flare ups with the magna. I have changed my grates to the ones listed below. A bit pricey but many options to choose from when ordering to save money if you have a way to customize. I had to cut one piece on a table saw and the other pieces were to order. One can call and ask any question you might have. I highly recommend these. I checked the surface of the grates with an infrared gun after preheat and there was less than 10 degrees difference on any area of the grill. I can cook ribeye, chicken with the skin on, you name it with no flare ups. And the sear marks are fantastic!

Just bite the bullet and get the New Magna they are made for the use and environment you will ultimately spend that much buying and replacing cheap crap take it from me I have done that too many times I buy the good stuff now and it lasts. You will be glad you did that is unless this is a passing fad and you will be out of boating in a couple of years. What's that old saying pay me now or pay me later. Good luck with your choice.

Post 6 says with the BBQ on the stern rail, it was in the way of sailing. Almost sounds like it was mounted INSIDE the rail, not outside?

When I moved up from B235 to 323, I brought along my charcoal grill. Seemed like a good idea at the time, except that coals dust and drippings landed on the swim platform. Decided to spend the money on a new Magma gas BBQ (it was alot less money 10 years ago) with hinged lid and life is gooder. Also got the adaptor to fill the little propane cans from the big tank. I clamped it onto the horizontal rail and it rested on the horeshoe ring's bracket for stability. (no horseshore in the bracket- I use it to hang the shore power cord.)

I was at Bacons' last week, and they have oodles of BBQs in the back room.

I disagree so strongly, I'm actually baffled by your post. There must be something wrong with your grill, or (no offense) you don't know how to use it properly. I can grill you whatever you want on my Magma, from hot dogs to filet mignon, cooked however you like, and you won't know it didn't come from Ruth's Chris, or the Four Seasons.

And I can do it in 20 knot winds.

We just CAN'T be talking about the same grill!!

No offense taken. The gas control valve is very crude and can't be turned down low enough to keep the temperature controlled. Thereis no air draft control so maybe yours is set differently. The unit is poorly designed imho and not up to the cheapo hardware store units in functionality. Because of the rail mounting it is safer to use but the lack of better temperature control is a serious short coming long with other parts of the design.

I think maybe we just cook our food very differently. My Magma definitely runs very hot in general, but to me, that's a good thing. A GREAT thing. It's the first and only grill I've ever owned that I felt was hot ENOUGH. "Black shoe leather on the outside, raw on the inside" sounds like only a slight exaggeration for "a perfectly done steak" to me.

I've also never had, used or wanted an air draft control on a gas grill. IMO, grilling meat should be done over an OPEN grill. Otherwise it's not grilling at all, it's baking.

So, I guess it's just widely varying personal taste. Wish I could be there when you deep six yours; I'd dive in and salvage it. I want an extra one for my house.

I like my Magma grill. (BBQ is food, not something you grill on.) I wish I could turn it a little cooler but that gives me an excuse to stay on deck while my First Mate finishes getting everything else ready. Other than that I'm happy with my Magma grill.

Larry, you need to buy the mounting kit (sold separately) Currently I have mine mounted in my Scotty rodholder mount - works pretty well and I can take it off and go fishing!
