Is there such a thing as an inexpensive GPS kit that can be downloaded on a laptop so that I can use my laptop screen to check positions out? (Marine only)..I'd like to go out on a blind adventure, but not get lost... Thanks

You still need a GPS receiver...

But you can get charts and a chart program for free from Maptech.com. Go to this link: http://www.freeboatingcharts.com/ At the top of the page, click on DOWNLOADS. Right side of the page in the blue box, 4th link down, click on: Digital Charts/ChartKits (& 'FreeBoatingCharts.com') In the TOP DOWNLOADS box, 4th link down, click on: Chart Navigator 5.07c - Full Product (no charts) I understand that the software will interface with GPS. You can also get Raster Charts from NOAA or from Maptech at: http://www.freeboatingcharts.com/index.cfm?page=download Hope this is what you were looking for. If not, sorry.

I think that you need

to learn more about the Global Positioning System. The devise that we hold in hand is a very sophisticated receiver, computer and display. It can not be replicated in a computer program. There are however GPS receivers that can be had for less that 150 USD and maybe for less in Canada. The attached link will serve as a very good primer for understanding GPS. G'luck. If you are looking...

...for a site that you can download a chart and pinpoint a lat/lon position, try the following link. http://www.maptech.com/onlinemaps/index.cfm?CFID=27265&CFTOKEN=18625917 Then select "The MAPTECH Map Server". Take it from there. Then select the type of map tab and move your cursor over the chart.

Yes, You just need what is called an

"OEM/Sensor" and a mapping program that supports GPS (most do now) if the free Maptech program mentioned works it would be a good choice. Many companies make the sensors, I've added a link here to a place with the Garmin GPS 18 for $90 with a USB connection, it's typical of those made for laptops. I've used a Garmin GPS 16 which looks like a hockey puck, and there is also a GPS 17 that looks like a typical marine external GPS ant. The link to Garmin's page of sensors is: http://www.garmin.com/oem/ They can be purchased with USB, Serial or bare wires (roll your own) The LVS or HVS stands for Low or High voltage, Low uses ~3 volts (DC) (USB or mouse plug) or high voltage 12-16 (DC) (Serial). Easiest is USB but serials work fine too. Some years ago I ordered some with serial for data & a Mouse plug for power and they were less than $125. I have even used Microsoft MapPoint (a land map program) at sea, no detail, just an arrow in the ocean of a roadmap.
