Catalina 34 Naples FL
Last week my boat was struck by lightning and it knocked out my AC among other things. I am now shopping for a new AC unit. I have a 34 Catalina and live in Naples Florida. Hot year round, real hot in the summer. My old AC was a Flagship Marine 1650 and it just had a hard time keeping it cool in the summer.
I would lke some suggestions from other tropic sailors on what they have and are they happy with it etc. Also anyone who has had a bad experience would also be good. Terry

My Mermaid has worked flawlessly since I installed it in 2000( http://www.mmair.com/marine_division/air_conditioning ). I was on Lake Erie at the time and 12K was sufficient. Now she is just up the coast from you, in Port Richey, and needs a 16K. So I close off the front of the boat during the day and only cool the salon area.

I have a Marine Air “Cabin Mate”, 12000 BTU in a Hunter 34 .. Probably needs a 16000 for those really hot days.. The 12000 was comfortable but ran constantly in the afternoons.. It just failed a couple of weeks ago.. after 15 years. I am going to look hard at replacing with a 16000 BTU unit of the same brand. I had a lightning strike several years back which failed the fan speed control to high speed only; new controls fixed that part.

Ditto on Ed's comment-our mermaid 16K heat/AC system has worked flawlessly. the 16K mermaid was easy to install and should work fine on your boat in FL

Our 16,500 Flag Ship Marine has worked very well on our H33.5 but looses ground during the day here in St. Louis. However just getting the humidity out of the boat makes a big difference. Finding room for a bigger unit to keep an un-insulated boat cold during the hot summer would have been a challange. We find that placing that cheap silver colored bubble wrap (used for hot water heaters) in each hatch helps tremdously.

Claude...

I'm running the same size BTU (12K King Air) as you up here on the Chesapeake. We typically get 90 degree days with high humidity (sounds like "Narlins" doesn't it?) up here in July and August. I found that hatch covers cut down the heat gain and impoved cooling in the boat during the middle of the day. One of my dockmates also flys canvas tents over his deck during the heat of the day and finds his AC doesn't work as hard. Things to think about.

As others have mentioned, give the Mermaid product serious consideration. I know of a good many owners that have the same positive comments about their installations.

I have a King-Air 19K BTU Reverse cycle unit that is eighteen years old now and works flawlessly. I don't know about other brands, but when mine goes I'll get another one. Without it, I'd likely only float Spring and Fall.

I bought a 16000 and a 7500 Ocean Breeze( mfg in Stuart,FL). They work well and use a readily available house-type thermostat. If they have any re-furb units available, you can get them a great price with a new warranty.

I have a Mermaid water to air system. Been in the boat for 10 years. Works great. I am very happy with the unit.
