My Marine Air AC Pan is rusting bad, and it's only 2 1/2 seasons old, Any Ideas on how to fix, alot of small spaces to reach to clean!!

Consider installing a drain on bottom of pan

I've seen too many marine A/C units installed (by so-called "professionals") without any thought given to draining the condensate. On my boat (1989 Hunter 30G, J-Bird), the condensate drains into a shower sump pump box (see the West Marine catalog for examples) and is automatically pumped overboard. Still, I've experienced rust, too. The problem is that the drain plugs are located on the vertical lip of the metal retaining pan, so that as much as 1/4" of water is left even when the pan is fully "drained." I'm re-installing the unit so that the condensate drains from the BOTTOM of the pan.

IF YOUR PAN DRAINS INTO YOUR BILDGE DON'T WORRY. BUT THAT PAN SHOULD BE STAINLESS!!! CALL THEM THEY SHOULD REPLACE IT.

AC pan rusting too!

I logged in tonight with a list of topics. Found this one already in play. My late 2000 model 340 has factory installed Marine Air unit. Drains out the side and into the shower box. Rusted badly and leaking into the area under the settee. I think I will call Hunter or Marine Air. I wonder if they have a replacement pan in stainless with a bottom drain. Having one built custom will not be cheap. Any other ideas?

What shower box?

Brian, My 340 doesn't have a shower box, just hoses running all over to the bilge. where is this box located? where does it throw the water out of the boat?

That'll make it harder to keep clean and odor free, Brian

The best sump/drain cleaner on the planet (ok...maybe a small exaggeration) is Raritan C.P. It's marketed only as toilet bowl cleaner, but is a bio-enzymatic cleaner than not only destroys odor on contact, but also "eats" hair, soap scum, grease and oils, etc, and the slime in a/c condensate. A healthy squirt down the shower drain when it has time to stand at least overnight is all that's needed to keep sumps clean and sweet smelling. However, without a little water in the sump, that "healthy squirt" becomes just a small puddle...it NEEDS a 1/2" or so of water in the sump to cover whole bottom and get into the sump pump. If you reroute the drain so that the sump drains out the bottom, whatever is left (think "bathtub ring" and whatever else is left clinging to bathtub walls when all the water has been drained)--will only sit and grow and nasty smelly critters that prefer a damp environment to one that's under water.

Mine too

I called Marine air a few weeks ago. I was advised that it might still be under warranty. They suggested that hunter may have installed the pan incorrectly. They also told me that a stainless steel upgrade was available. All 3 of my pans are rusting. Last year, I told Angus ( my dealer) of the problem. They suggested that perhaps a screw had fallen into all 3 pans and said they would look into it. I wonder how many other people have the same defect? If this thread is kept alive long enough, surely, others such as myself will pipe in. H460 Millennium Magic Warren

AC Pan rusting

Build it yourself out of starboard. Never have to deal with it again..

Ours too.

Seems to be a quite common problem. The pans of our MarineAir units are rusting badly too. Our boat is only from 1999. Rafael Pérez H410 Marina Clara

Reply to "What Shower Box?"

The shower box is just aft of the main bilge area. Our boat is a 2000 model 340. I imagined all 340's came with a shower box. Several items are plumbed into the box. Shower, A/C Condensate, Fridge box. The refigeration compressor unit does not have a pan or drain, but does not seem to make much moisture. The heat it generates evaporates the moisture.

No Shower Box's in the 2000 340's I've seen

Could you post a picture!

H380 - Same Problem

Our 2000 H380 has the same problem. I'd be interested in what M.A. tells anyone about an "upgrade". David S/V Mollie Jean

Mike, opposite of port?

You asked what is starboard. See Related Link for the real answer I think. But in my neighborhood at least it would be cheaper to make out of stainless. And much easier. What is the Marine Air pan material? My Mermaid is stainless and no sign of corrosion so far. But I am in fresh water.
