I'm getting closer to finalizing all the plans for moving "my" boat from Long Island to NJ. I'm leaning heavily toward having her hauled, since I am persnickety and want to go over the rigging and sails, and am not sure what electronics she has onboard, and thus don't want to risk sailing her. It's tempting, but still, in the end, I think hauling will wind up being somewhat cost-competitive to sailing (at least using my "math").

So, now the next issue is, to where do I want her hauled? If I'm going to keep her at the NJ shore (which I'm inclined to do since my in-laws have a condo in Avalon), I'd like to keep her in the Stone Harbor to Ocean City region. With that, admittedly big, limitation in mind, my thought was that having her near Great Egg Harbor would give me a chance to play in the bay while being able to "graduate" to the ocean fairly easily. It looks like All Seasons Marina in Marmora might be a good choice for my boat (an Irwin 25', with a 2'8" draft and 8' beam), but I'm open to other suggestions. My parents had their powerboats at All Seasons many years ago, and the marina looks to have gone downhill since then, but the prices are reasonable for the NJ shore, and I'd have easy access to the bay.

Does anyone have any other recommendations? I talked to Commodore Bay Marina in Avalon, whose location would be very convenient to my in-law's place, but they want over $5000 per year for a slip, which is about twice what All Seasons would charge, and I'm not sure I can justify the difference in price, plus I'd be "learning" on the ocean. Not the worst thing, but perhaps I might be better off waiting a season or two and then moving over in that direction.

I'd really like to find a good slip at someone's house, but I'm not sure how to go about finding that right now!

So, now that I've just told you my life's story...does anyone have any recommendations for reasonably priced, sailboat-friendly marinas/slips in that area?

All Seasons makes your boat really dirty with the type of parking lot they store the boats on... you get a white film on everything that is difficult to remove.. my father kept his boat there over two winters, and it was a real issue.

Nick, would you PM me his contact info?I was kicking around the idea of motoring it home (the main is ripped and I need to find a replacement) over a few days, but not necessarily consecutive days. As an inexperienced boat owner, the only part that really worried me was the cut from Long Island to the NJ coast, and whether I could do that all in a day (including finding a safe harbor) and the amount of gas I'd need for each leg of the journey. I would much rather do the trip than hire a trailer, and splitting it over a few different days would make it more enjoyable, at least until the weather turns.

Billy, where does he keep his boat now?

You could likely pay someone to deliver it to NJ over water for you cheaper than trailering it thru NYC don't you think?

Seadaddler, I've sent you an E-mail. Please PM/E-mail me if it doesn't go through and I'll reply.

Fly_H23, I'm not sure where to find someone who can do that for me. I'm sure they are out there! I've considered motoring her home myself, but doing so this time of year is a bit daunting (I'm not a cold weather fan!).

Billy, I called Graef's Boat Yard - they can't winter store sailboats. Their summer slip rates look great - I'll be callign them back! :) Smith's marina was interesting, too.
