Marina Slip Fees

I was just notified by my marina in Mystic, CT that the slip fees for 2004 will be based upon slip length, not boat length. This has a material impact on what I pay given that I own an O'Day 23 and the slip she's in is 32'! I will obviously attempt to secure a smaller slip, but I'm curious how others on the Northeast are charged for slips - is it by the boat length or the slip length? Are there any marinas that anyone can recommend on the CT coast from Old Saybrooke and north? Thanks. Regards, Sean

dock length

Sean: I sail in the Great Lakes and the marina I rent a slip from charges by the size of the slip. I sail a 28 and the dock length is 32 feet and I am charged by the dock. In other marinas I was charged by the size of the boat regardless of dock length. I guess it's cause to get a boat which matches the dock length. Do you think our wives will go for that reasoning? NOT! Regards, Mike S/B Pitterpat, Lake Huron

Right in your neighborhood next year!

I did a LOT of shopping for marina space this fall in looking for a home for Averyanne. It seems that most if not all of the marinas on the Sound in Ct. charge by the slip length, or by boat length + a minimum and an expensive one at that. We picked Noank for the view and relative quiet (we think). We however could only afford a mooring. I didn't like their slip set-up anyway. Noank Village Boatyard was our second choice. Great dockage but still $$$. I bought Averyanne while it was slipped at Goodsel Point Marina in Branford. Great docks and cheap at $43/ft but few services and I'm no fan of southern Ct. Good luck. See you on the river!

Mooring

Rob and Mike, thanks for the response. Quite an exensive hobby we have, isn't it? My wife didn't go for the "bigger boat" pitch, so that leaves me with accepting the cost of a slip that's too large for my O'Day. Just out of curiosity, Rob, how'd you go about getting a mooring? Is it expensive? Where do you launch in order to get to Averyanne? I've motored/sailed past the moorings just at the mouth of the Mystic River countless times and have wondered about getting a mooring there. Thanks. -SRF
