Next week we are towing our boat to Flathead lake , and we booked a slip at the marina.
The slip has power and water. We never had shore power on a boat, but I was thinking of just bringing an extension cord just to charge the phone,iPad and maybe a fan in the cabin.
Would a regular extension cord fit those plug ins or do they all have a big 3 prong type plugin like the ones RV's use.

Most of the ones I have seen also have regular 120 plug.

One clue would be if they offer 30 amp service, in that case it is certainly the "big round one". Also at most marinas that are properly set up ordinary extension cords are verboten.

You can also pick up a 30a-to-20a adapter, which lets you plug a regular extension cord into one of those round outlets.

I've used an extension cord for years, and never had a marina yet that didn't have a regular 3 prong outlet on the hookup. This including the Bahamas.

One thing you really should do is get a ground fault interrupt to plug in the extension cord- You can buy then aftermarket in many places

In our marina, the rule is the cord has to be amp-rated for whichever outlet it's plugged into.

Some marinas have removed the regular AC outlets. Spud Point Marina, Bodega Bay Ca. where my boat is now has removed all outlets except the marine ones. If you use an adapter just make sure you have a tie on the boat end of the cord to securely tie in the boat as it dropping over the side is the biggest concern. Chief

I've always found it handy to carry a male 30a locking-female 15a and a male 15a to female 30a locking. This lets me plug my boat in to standard plugs and allows me to run power tools off marine pedestals. It also solves your problem (my first boat was not wired for shore power). You can by the parts at Home Depot.

Should have mentioned that I carry the adapters to plug my 3 prong into whatever outlet is needed. They don't take up much space :)

a. If the adapter is short, nothing live will fall in the water. As you say, it is always the boat end that poses the risk.
b. Yup, I've even been in boat yards where the power was the marine locking style.

If you do get a 30amp adapter, make sure it is for marine use. The RV adapter is similar but will not fit the marine receptacle.
