I think the name is

Leeward Marina - it is located next to the Newport News shipyard and just before you get to the James River Bridge. Excellent facilities, clean showers and restrooms. My best buddy Steve used to keep his boat there and was very satisfied, but I know they have raised their rates in the last year or so. Stay RIGHT ON the channel markers going in or out when the tide is out - very little margin for error before you find the mudflats.

As well

There are other marinas in Smithfield and Gloucester Point as well. We prefer York River Yacht Haven on the York River for amenities, better wind, access to the middle of Chesapeake Bay.

Hampton

Also check out Bluewater Marina in Hampton. We stopped there on our way back up the bay from Jamestown last month.

Bill makes a good point

because if you want to sail in the Chesapeake Bay (who doesn't?), berthing at Newport News means you have a pretty good slog through the Hampton Roads/Norfolk harbor area before you are out in the Bay, and there is often some pretty heavy big ship traffic to avoid. Strong currents and tides make it interesting if you like that kind of problem solving, too.

Steve,

I agree with what everyone else has said, there are a number of marinas in Newport News and Hampton..... you might want to check the "Cruising Guide to the Ches. Bay"; it has a nice list of marina names and phone numbers... Also, ck out Salt Ponds Marina, it is in Hampton, and has VERY nice access onto and off of the Bay. The extra 10-15 minutes that it may take you to drive there will be much less than the sailing time from Newport News thru Hampton Roads to the Bay.

Hampton Creek

Bluewater has a brand new floating dock marina and hampton Roads is a great sailing ground with the option of heading up the bay. I lived in Newport News for 25 years and loved every minute. You are 20 minutes from everywhere.
