What a bummer! Some will be very sad and others may not be...
OMG! I'm checking out my fire extinguishers next time I'm at the boat. I had no idea they burned like that!
Where do they come up with this stuff...
"These boats were covered up since October. There's no reason for them to start burning," said Seneca Fire Chief Jerry Sears. "It's suspicious."
I can think of a number of reasons that can happen.
*A frozen bilge pump with improper fusing and the batteries left connected.
*A battery charger left running and failure.
*An owner working on the boat and left a heater going..
*Batteries left connected
*Shore power plugged in and an AC fault.
*A slow LPG or gas leak and AC or DC still plugged in creating a spark from a non-ignition protected source...
When you consider that 55% of boat fires are electrical in nature why would it be any different out of the water with the systems still operating. One could come up with plenty more plausible explanations too....
There is a reason most yards demand boats not be left connected to power and the batteries disconnected while in dry storage.
Not saying any of these is the cause but the statement above is quite lacking in forethought.... It could be electrical in nature just as easily as foul play..

Hard to watch. Hopefully they are all fully insured.
I disagree with the following statement that led the chief to declare this suspicious. I hope he is doing a more thorough investigation than that.

Wow bob. That's unfair. If you have been to the area, you would understand that Seneca is a mostly rural community some 40 miles from Chicago, and is in fact 90% white (10% Hispanic).
If it was not a unfortunate accident, you have to look at the possibility of random arson, or some owner trying to get out of a boat they cannot afford. In either case, I doubt that person looks anything like someone from the 'hood'.
I've lived many years in both rural and urban areas, and can tell you for a fact there are about the same percentages of trouble makers in both places, with equal representation in all races. Unless the fire chief has info he's not sharing, he's talking out his @ss. There's no real reason to believe vandalism is the most likely cause. Insurance fraud, maybe, but that conclusion should be withheld until after an investigation.
Another possible cause may have been the absence of an inline fuse in the hot wire from the battery to the switch.... Do you have one?
Good point. BTW, this is one of the BEST ways I know to add them. Easy and very const effective. Mounts directly to the battery + terminal.
