I'm getting fed up with how we are being treated. After seeing annual 10% increases in virtually everything including the big stuff like dock space, our winter contracts include a charge for NOT taking the mast down. I've been there in the winter and can't find any tracks in the snow wherre the yard guys should have been checking poppets so I know they don't... and can't think of any other reason for tacking on this charge other than simple "gotcha's". $120/foot $75/hr labor rate $200 to do nothing with the mast $4/ft to clean the bottom, etc. 1.Are there still any reasonable marinas out there? 2.From #1 above, are there any which have space available next season in my area? Can't help you with marinas, but I feel your pain. My boat is on the hard at a local "do it yourself" yard here in Annapolis. I've always gotten the guys to lift my boat the night before she goes back in, so that I can paint the spots where the jacks were and let it dry. Just found out today that it will now cost me $45 for the "privilege" of hanging in the sling overnight. What?!? Geez, that steamed me. That, after I am ultra flexible as to the time they haul/float my boat because I am close by. I agree the $200 charge is pretty unbelievable. But, given that Newport is for the rich and famous, I can't imagine that many people complain. It's like here in Annapolis, so many boaters just pay and don't give a hoot about the $$$, it drives up the cost for everyone. Several marinas have stopped selling diesel because all the money is in powerboats here and not many are diesel powered. That's all they want to cater to. Don't know about you, but with these charges and yesterday's election, I think it's time to go sailing .....

Thus if you don't pay in December, you may not have a spot for your boat in the summer. Really cute.

Buy a Condo Slip
Protect yourself against rising rent and buy a condo slip. We bought a 44-ft slip at the Poulsbo Yacht Club today they're going somewhere in the $24,000 range. This includes a modern workshop, clubhouse that can be rented cheaply for family get-togethers, weddings, etc. Taxes and condominium maintenance are about $100/month, far less than the rent at nearby marinas. The condominium maintenance fee includes maintenance, periodic maintenace of some items, and scheduled replacement for major items such as pilings, floats, and docks. Also, as a yacht club member, which is required to own a slip, one gets reciprocal moorage at most of the best yacht clubs. Annual dues are minimal and there is 12 hours of work-or-pay (24 for a couple), and many fringe benefits too numerous to list. Dues works out to about $20/month for a couple. We've noticed that the taxes, maintenance fee, and dues are less than what the appreciation has been. If one plans to stay in one place for a while I'd consider this a very good option.

Don, you indicate you are from Newport. Is that Newport, RI? That should answer your question. Try moving out of Newport and upbay away from the congestion & prices. I am hearing rumors that our marina is going to exceed $100/ft this year. It happens everywhere - only worse in Newport.

Don, I am at a marina at the other end of Narragansett Bay in East Greenwich. The year round pricing is $105 a foot. This covers Launching, slip cost, hauling out at the end of the season and winter storage on the hard. They charge additional for the jack stands. Even with the costs at that level the marina rents all it's slips each season. I guess it is a supply and demand issue. Everyone is trying to make a profit and the marina's are coming up with other ways they can charge to make money. Pretty soon they will put in meters to charge you for the water you put in your tanks and also charge you to "rent" the two wheel carts we use to haul our "stuff" between the parking lot and the boat.

Management has spent two years research and now developing floating docks with oyster nets in the middle, to harvest 20 million a year. If it works, it will create cash flow to keep down the escalating cost of running (and charging for) a marina. This is a terrific investment that has the attention of marine and marina officials along the East Coast. By the way, their fees are quite reasonable, judging from other comments here.

Another Rate-Chasing Exercise
Marina costs on the Chesapeake vary considerably. I am currently paying about $80/foot. I know of others in the $100+ and some much less tha $80. As with your credit cards, you must check around for better rates if you want to control such costs.

Got lucky with a mooring
Hi, Up until this past season, I was on a mooring in a marina and experienced about a 10% rental increase each season where the last season was abt $1400 (33' boat). I'll skip the long story but I ended up getting on their list too late for this past season so I didn't get a mooring and ended up owning my own mooring. Lucky because I just happened to call a harbor master as a new area was being opened up. Total cost of equipment and having it planted was less than 1 season's rental. On going cost will be a 65/yr mooring maintenance fee and abt $100 town tax (which I had to pay on rented mooring as well). Bob Pilgrim
