One of the marelon thru hull handles that services the water intake to my head snapped off today. It was three years old and I had it installed when I bought the boat to replace the gate valve that was there at that time. Two Questions: 1) Do I need to replace the entire thru hull or can the handle itself be replaced? 2) If a replacement of the entire thru hull is needed does the boat have to be hauled? Thanks for any advice, Joe Mullee

Broken Ball Valve Handle

Possibly the handle could be replaced, but more likely the entire ball valve will need to be replaced. I have done two in the water by myself. The one you are refering to, and one in my galley. Plus the one for the macerator with help. Have someone hold one of those suction cup handles over the through hole while you change the valve. The one in the head was reachable from the dock, the other two would require scuba gear.

I know i have seen them, but I can't find the handles in the WM catalog nor at Forespar's site. However, I have noted the link. I'd call them. Rick D.

I change the whole thing

When I broke a handle for the head sink drain thru-hull, I had to replace the whole assembly. Where it was located also necessitated a quick haul to replace it. I was planning to leave on a vacay a few days later. That was an expensive handle!

Replace the valve.

Most of these units are sold as one piece, OEM instillations. I have a C310 #26 abd after the second one broke I called Forespar to discuss. In 2002 the valves were redesigned with a longer screw through the handle and into a molded in sleeve in the body. The earlier versions have a small self tapping screw, that just didn't hold. I was able to replace all of them with the boat in the water. Use the bung on the end of the handle to plug the through hull from the outside, only a very slight amount of water enters. Unscrew the top half, and replace. It took about 90 minutes to do all 6. After a nice conversation with the President of Forespar, they replace all my through hulls free of charge. All of this was done with no thanks to Catlina, they said it was a Forespar problem even though the boat was under warranty I can't say enough good things about how Forespar stood behind their products.

Handle It

You have two choices...you can change the handle (tricky but it can be done and without a haul-out), or change the entire thru-hull. If it were me, and It was, I changed the entire thru-hull and changed it to all brass. Its more expensive...but it won't break!
