Manual Windlasses

Don

I am considering installing a manual windlass on my Hunter 35.5- either a vertical Royal or a horizontal anchorman. I have decided manual as I don't want the motor hanging from the roof in the V-berth and I don,t want the installation problems in running the heavey wire all the way forward. I have a chain and rope combination so I beleive I need the model with the gypsy and drum ? I am not sure if the gypsy handles both and if so what is the drum for? I am leaning toward the horizontal as they appear to be like a standard winch operation - good speed and power. and economical. I really can get away without one now but with 30 feet of chain and a 35 lb. Delta, a little help for that last 30 feet would be nice. Any thoughts or insight appreciated. Thanks Don

Make it two

Don - I'd like a manual windlass too, for much the same reasons you've cited. I've looked thru the current catalogues but everything seems to be powered: I'm sure that there used to be manual windlasses available once, using either a winch handle or a bar to crank them. If you find something,, please post it here. Tks.

Manual windlass

Attached is a cite to a pretty good article on windlasses, inlcuding pros and cons on manual vs electric. I think Lewmar has had a manual up to recently, though I am not sure if its still in the line. Apparently Lofrans also makes one.

URLs

Apparently you can't put multiple URLs in an email so this is the first of three with the references from my last email.

Thanks Ted

The article from 'Good Old Boat' was particularly interesting & I saved all 3 of your posts for future ref. Hope that Don benefited as well.

Don - consider consignment

Don, consider consignment either in Steveston or Popeye's in North Vancouver. I just purchased a working Lofrance Royal for around $300 at Popeyes. Visually it is in good shape and works fine; I haven't installed it yet. I don't have a lot of chain and my Delta is the 22 pound jobby, so with 35 pounds of chain, around 60 pounds with shackles, etc. I'm not concerned about hauling in the line, just the chain and anchor as I age so the way will have the Royal set up, the chain side will be the dominant side, if you know what I mean.
