I have a Oday 322. I would like to install a manual windlass. Rope rode with 15 feet of chain. Any info and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Did a quick search in a couple of chandleries and could not find a manual windlass. Checked some of the used components markets and the manual units for sale were old and probably lacking in replacement parts. To find a manual windlass you may have to look to European manufacturers. I agree that a manual windlass is much more practical than an electrical one but looking for yesterday's technology in to day's marketplace is not yielding many results. By the way I don't know how heavy is your chain but a boat your size should carry at least 30' of chain. The Photo is of an Italian made Italowinch being sold in Amazon UK by a vendor that unfortunately does not ship to the US.

Thanks Benny I ran into the same issue.
And thanks for the recommendation of more chain. I will get on that.

Probably lacking?

I have a Simson Lawrance Seatiger 555 manual that was installed in 1985. All parts are still available. I had mine rebuilt and it works fantastic. It was at the top of my list for replacement when we bought the boat in 2008. Now its not on the list at all, dont need all the complexity of an elec winch on the saltiest part of the whole boat.

Hopefully the OP can find a small manual, it will be worth it.

The Seatiger 555 has a chain gypsy on one side and rope capstain on the other side. Big, solid unit. Even used, they are not cheap. Bacon sales in Annapolis usually has some on hand. I paid Merke Marine $700 for a complete rebuild.

I'm willing to pay. I know they are not cheap. I also know the medical bills for a bad back aren't cheap. Thanks for the info.

Yes. It does include both chain gypsy and rope drum. Read the description....
  • Manually operated (by included handle) windlass with separate rope capstan and chainwheel.
  • Finished in polished anodized coating for added protection
  • Unique aluminum collar design won’t bind or corrode over years in saltwater environment
  • Rope drum can be used independently of gypsy
  • Mount the chain wheel and capstan on either side of the on-deck housing

Thanks Tally ho
I did read it and your correct. The gypsy didn't accept rope but the drum does.
This might be the one.

Let me know how you mount it on your O322. I think I am going to add a folding prop before a windlass, but I certainly like the idea of a manual one.

I have my eyes on another one as well. I'll send the info and pictures when I decide which one I'm going with. The other option is a Muir manual windlass.

Why do you feel you need a windlass when using rope rode? Windlasses are designed to raise chain off the bottom, not pulling the boat up to the anchor. Using a manual windlass with rope will be difficult...they don't make them self-tailing. Having one hand on the rope and one on the winch handle will be awkward to see the least.

If you feel you need a windlass and I'm not sure why you feel you need one, buy an electric one if you are going to use rope.

We use the anchor a lot and I'm of the mind set less power less problems. I know the power windlass draws a lot and sometimes fails. I figured the manual would be simple instal and no battery usage.

It is easier to pull rope in by hand than to use a manual windlass.

Could you attach the rode to a line winch and haul it?

it crossed my mind. Right now it's all on hold. I will continue to use man power to lift anchor.
