Manual vs. Electric head?

I have a 30' O'Day with plumbing problems. After trying to figure out what is the problem without sucess on any single item - I plan to replace the almost 20 yr old system (my guess - I'm not the original ownwer). I have a family that is getting more excited about sailing and weekend trips except for the head part. I plan to put in new hoses, vents and a head reusing only the holding tank and seacocks. While I want to be economical, I don't want to sail alone! I'm considering a compact head from Raritan or Jabsco. Are these good? Is the added expense worth it? Is it an issue with the battery? I don't have any experience with this and welcome any advice. Thanks.

Compact toilets are manual toilets

I suggest you do some homework before deciding which toilet best suits your needs. Most of the specs for the various electric toilets are on the mfrs' websites. http://www.raritaneng.com http://www.wilcox-crittenden.com http://www.groco.net Fwiw, I'm partial to Raritan toilets...and I'm not alone. They're consistently rated the best "bang for the buck" on the market. http://www.jabsco.com

Don't waste your money.

Chris: Do not waste you money on a Jabsco. I had one for about 2 years and it is crap. I am going with a Raritan PHII this time. One advantage of these units is the ability to upgrade it to an electric in the future and the ability to use it as a manual if the electric unit ever fails. They use these old clunkers on fishing boats, so I figure that they should last quite a while.

My Experience

My Hunter came with a full size and a compact Jabsco manual head. Four years ago I did the electric conversion on the full size and just completed an electric conversion on the compact. They can both be changed back to manual in a few minutes. Be sure to run very heavy oversized electrical wire if you go electric. Noisy, but no clogs.

Vote for Raritan

Chris, I've had the Raritan SeaEra electric on my H260 for this last season. My wife loves it, push the button to flush. A little noisy at 3 in the morning but hey whatever makes her happy. With two adults we use about 7-8 gallons for the weekend in a 13gal holding tank. I'm not really sure how much water the toilet uses per flush but doesn't seem like much. I also changed my hoses at the time of installation. Jim
