Manual toilet won't draw in fresh water

On board toilets seem simple, but always seem to give me a mystery each season. I have a Jabsco manual toilet. This season, it will flush OK, but won't draw in fresh water from the sea. The seacocks are open. I am not sure if something nested in the fresh water intake over the winter. I never had that problem before. Toilet was new 3 years ago and have not done any rebuilding of gaskets/joker valve since. Given that it flushes fine, that does not seem to be the issue. What is the easiest way to trouble shoot this?

Flapper valve in the top of the toilet.

If you left the toilet in the dry mode over the winter, that flapper valve has gotten "bent." (They also seem to fail a lot while the boat is out even if the toilet isn't left in the dry mode). Replace it and your toilet should bring in water again. You can get one directly from jabsco.

same problem

Hello, I had the same problem. Three year old Jabsco that did not bring in water when the switch was in the wet position. I was a little worried because this problem was discovered during the sea-trial of my boat (when I was selling it). Anyway, we (the new owner) ignored the problem and went sailing. When we were done sailing the toilet was working fine. I think that hitting some waves and getting water pushed into the toilet worked to 'prime' the pump. The new owner was happy and the boat is now sold. Good luck, Barry

Peggie, you have done it again

I took the pump apart and you were indeed right. The flapper gasket has a bend on the top of it. I just one more more thing to think about when I winterize... I will get a new one. Thank you!
