This is my first season with my 1984 C22. It's got a manual head, which we've used a total of three times. My questions: -how do you know when the holding tank is full? -the last time I flushed it, the bowl did not fill up with the blue stuff. -does the pumpout station add the blue stuff or do I buy it and fill it up somewhere in the head? Thanks.

ask Peggie

I add the blue stuff to the holding tank, not the head because I find that it eats the various soft parts of the unit. Select "expert forums" and ask Peggie the head mistress for her opinions.

I've never heard of a C22 with anything

other than a porta-potty. Is this what you're referring to? If you have an actual marine toilet with holding tank, I'd be real curious to know where/how it was installed.

C-22 Marine Head

Yes, some Catalina 22's have a real marine head. That is a porcelain head that draws water from a seacock and then dispenses the waste to either a holding tank or via a Y valve out through another larger seacock. My ‘81 C-22 came so equipped. John when you say “the bowl did not fill up with the blue stuff” leads me to believe you have a style of porta-pottty. While a porta-potty could be emptied at a pump out station, this is generally not the procedure. One usually removes the porta-potty and empties it ashore into a toilet or other acceptable receptacle. Even if you are at the Waldorf Astoria of pump out stations, I don’t think they’ll add the “blue stuff” to your porta-potty. It tends to be an owner-installed item.

Manual head - and answer to Chuck

Chuck - I hope you check these postings - I sail out of Erie Basin Marina. I don't have a name on my boat yet, since the name arrived in the mail after I launched it. It's Fezziwig: Dock F3 at Erie Basin Marina. Where are you?
