Manual for Yanmar

I need a good manual for the Yanmar Diesel in my 1984 Hunter 31. I needs to be designed for idiots. Need the name & source.

Diesel basics

Yours is a tough question in that there are many problems that cna be encountered on a diesel and ther are many degrees of idiocy. We presently have two books on the shelf pertaining to diesel engines. The first, by Don Seddon is called Diesel Troubleshooter. It is quite basic and covers many of the problems that you might encounter. The other, by Nigel Calder, called Marine Diesel Engines, is more comprehensive. Both start with the theory of operation of a Diesel Engine, which I feel is essential to understanding anything about diesels. Each diesel has its own peculiarities. Once you have the basics, you will better understand what is in the service manual for your engine.  When in doubt, consult (or use) a good mechanic.

Get Sealoc manual

Buy the Sealoc manual for Yanmars. It's like a chilton's for autos. Much easier to follow, better illustrated, step by step compared to official Yannie manual (better yet, get both). You can find the Sealoc manual at marine stores or order it from on-line bookstores.I haven't read either book recommended by Gordon, but another book by Nigel Calder, "Boat Owners Mechanical and Electrical Manual". It is an excellent reference on all your boats systems, including the diesel. Calder starts with a basic presumption that you know nothing about anything (pretty fair presumption for me when I started getting into a few years ago) and explains the basics of operation, repair and maintenance.

Second the Seloc

I second the recommendation for the Seloc manual which I own, as I too can be classified as an idiot diesel mechanic!!

Find other Yanmar Users Too!

We own Endless Summer (1983 H31 #58). We have the Yanmar manual that came with the engine and the Yanmar Maintenance Maunal. We have never needed any thing else EXCEPT more Yanmar knowledgible people. We found that our best maintenance advice has come from our Yanmar dealer (Complete Yachts, Ft. Lauderdale) and other Yanmar owners. I think Mack Boring has an office in North Carolina. You can find them on the net. Good dieseling!
