Do you have a fixed manual bilge pump installed and if so where? I have a whale gusher mounted on a plywood board, so "portable". However, it's reasonably heavy; and in an emergency I'd have to retrieve it, attach hose, find the handle, place it in position and then pump away. Clearly not ideal in an emergency.

I'd prefer to have it somewhere fixed and ready to go, but not sure where the best place would be. Any opinions on the value of portable or fixed manual bilge pumps is most welcome.

seems to me it is required by cg regs or something like that ...mine is mounted in the cockpit on the aft port inside ...flush mounted and the pump its self is behind that wall along with the pickup hose and the exit hose...its a guzzler/boswort brand....

There common and are required by different racing rules depending on the risk level of the event to have as many as two manual units one that can be pumped from inside the cabin and one from the cockpit

From what I've read, a "dewatering device" is in the CG recommended (not required) list with a bailing bucket counting as such; CG Aux boats are required to have a manual dewatering device (ie. bailer) on board.

Thanks for the info, that setup seems pretty ideal. I'm not sure if I can visualize how to flush mount my whale pump in the cockpit.

Mine also mounted

Mine is also mounted in the cockpit, between the inside bulkhead, and the hull. All you see is the screws and the hole for the handle. My only complaint with this setup is the hose is very long, and takes several pumps to get things moving from the bilge to the output on the transom.

The Whale in may C30 was in the port side cockpit locker just forward of the engine controls. Used it many times with success, although I wish I knew it was there when we were "taking on water" during the shakedown/delivery. Would have saved me a lot of work and kept one crew from 18 hours of seasickness!

The Whale in my C310 is located on the port side aft locker with access just under the helmseat. Nicely placed so in the event I am singlehanding, I can steer and pump at the same time if needed. Not sure if it works though...I have cobwebs in my bilge because it has never had water in it. I actually had to throw a few cups in before Irene to see if the electric pump actually worked!

Pic 1 is the C30, Pic 2 is the C310

My H340 had it's manual pump located in the walk-through stern like gpd955's C310, as did the other Hunters of similar design and era. The handle was stored in the helm lazarette for easy access without thinking (don't want to have to think about how to work the pump when the boat is taking on water). The discharge was under the helm sole, as that was a separate elevated platform in the Hunters, with shallow space below for drainage.

Worked very well the couple of times I used it, primarily for testing and dewatering the bilge when replacing the electric pump pre-launch. It took many strokes to get water to the pump, as the suction line was pretty long, but it had no trouble pulling a prime. It does have to be winterized, though, like any other water system.
