After all the good reviews I got off my wallet and bought one. I've got to say nobody mentioned the shaft being so short the balance makes it unable to sit in the bowroller even for a second without being tied or pinned. Maybe OK if you have a windless with a chain stopper but unsafe without one. I'm really disapointed and didn't need more decorations in the clubroom. Any suggestions?

Get a grab hook the size of your chain and splice a

length of line to it and lead the line to a cleat. When the anchor is on the roller, hook the chain and secure the line.

still unsafe

That will hold it but 35 lbs pulling constantly on a line just makes me very uncomfortable considering the amount of damage it would cause if it escaped underway. Beside ripping the chain locker apart it could be catastrophic if you wern't lucky enough to just lose it. Think healing, hearing a bunch of crashing noise, it setting, spinning the boat around under full sail. I don't even want to think about it. I'm thinking of taking a torch and carving out the front of the shank to get the roller further forward. Yes I know, burning galvanized can kill you and a no no.

I have, in my youth, welded many sheets of

galvanized steel to heavy steel frames. On the side away from the weld the zinc burns with a rather pretty green flame and produces a lot of white smoke which is zinc oxide, As in ointment. I don't think that huffing it would be wise but it is heavier than air and settles very quickly. Can you weld a hinged latch to the roller assembly?

Do the work with good ventilation, stay on the upwind side; you'll be fine.

No windless

Rick, it looks like a sweet setup you have there. I'm thinking this is what the term self launching means. Cool if you're handleing it with a button but having to hold it, lash it, after pulling it, then relying on lines, cables, whatever to keep it there while scrambling back to not run into anything getting out of the anchorage, is way too much for me. I need to get it into the roller, get control of the boat, then go forward to secure it before truly getting underway. Plus other than the dock cleat, I don't think there is much up there strong enough to support it all the time. My past anchors would ly there till I got back to them. Guess I'm spoiled... or not spoiled enough to buy a windless. The weather here is kinda suckie too, that's why I'm fooling around on the computer.

Doug , I have a home grown set up on Bietzpadlin

When I get the anchor firmly on the roller I drop one link of the chain into a fork on the tail end of the roller assembly. I don't have a picture to post. But dropping the chain into that keeper and taking a turn on the mooring bitt the anchor stays put through a hurricane.

I drilled a 1/4 hole through both sides of the anchor roller channel where the

chain attaches to the anchor to hold it in place I use a 1/4" pin on a 1/8" lanyard. Works well for leaving the anchor in place when towing and when I need it I pull the pin and drop anchor. Frank

Lame excuses I think

If you're capable of pulling your anchor up manually then it surely doesn't take acrobatics to put a chain hook on it to secure it (as in earlier post) and it is also possible to wrap your chain around a cleat for temporary holding. As far as there being so much tension on the hook and line then you must not have faith in your dock lines or nylon anchor rode either. Tension is your friend on a chain hook. For permanent holding just drill holes in the bow roller the size of the keeper pin that you would install through the slot or convenient hole in the shank. I also have a 45 Manson Supreme on a bow roller and even with a windlass I make sure to clip a chain hook to it for security reasons. I back the windlass down to make sure that all of the tension is on the chain hook for sailing. Works great. Ned

Hmmm

Well I thank most of you for your thought out responses and there are useable plans but I think they are designed for a windless. That in mind I'm either going to weld a chock on the lower side or check with Defender about shipping it back for a Bruce since it never has been used. Ned, do it manualy then tell me about it.
