I never get that sudden hard jolt when the anchor sets - I have the 8-Plait anchor rode and when I throw my engine in reverse (and I can be almost full throtle) all that happens is that I keep stretching my rode further and further and further. Its truly like a rubber band.
Sometimes when the winds are light and I rev the engine in reverse to set the anchor, if I take the gas off the throttle abruptly the boat will almost shoot forward like a sling shot
But in heavy rough conditions this is a real plus & one of the great features of the 8-Plait rode, if you have huge storm surge or heavy hard winds, much of the energy being applied to the boat goes into stretching the rode and not directly to the anchor dug into the bottom so you are less likely to drag or pull out your anchor
