As a sailor who likes to charter in the USVI now and then, I was surprised to read in the Nov 2006 "Boat US Magazine" (see pg 9) that, as of Sept 2006, it is mandatory for everyone aboard a vessel to wear a life jacket, not just have them aboard. Children under 17 must wear a Type I or II when the boat is being operated (not the more comfortable and popular Type III vest). Boat US expects this law to be amended or clarified to spell out just when and how it should be implemented as, for example, it does not differentiate between moving boats or those at docks or anchored... In the interim, anyone heading to the USVI, on their own boat or to charter, please take heed....

it's going to come here too. just like anti-smoking and auto seat belt legislation, the total irresponsiblity of the "it's my right to risk anything" group will force pfd legislation, no matter how loud they scream. i'm not arguing, but making a prediction.

We have anti smoking laws and now no trans fats. What's next? I am not anti-goverment and usually saftey minded but I am getting tired of other people telling me what I can and can not do!

it stinks! The USVI? That place was close to chaos last time I was there a few years ago. Sounds like a diversionary law by the politicians to make it look like they are in control. People falling off of boats is not their problem. It's crime. The boating industry moved to the BVI's. Most of them anyway. The one's on the US side didn't get there riding a cruise ship. They're sailors who for the most part know what they are doing. But, regardless, it's BS. Alcohol is the problem they should be regulating. But that's too hard to spot. More Caribbean laziness.

Trans fats are very bad. The government is doing the public a great service. I wish they would do that down here too. The reason restaurants use trans fats is because they are cheaper and they last longer. Guess what, they also last longer in your system. Fast food makes us fat and that's because all the fried food has trans fats. The government isn't saying you can't eat trans fats, just that you can't serve it to somebody else. If I'm going to pay $25 for a plate, it better darn well be made with quality ingredients, not that cheap damaging stuff.

It's the high tech PFD

Companys that lobby to make it mandatory so they can sell more products and I agree with Fred "politicians to make it look like they are in control." I spend time every year in St.Croix and I can tell ya about more caribbean laziness. Ya Mon

Does that apply to cruise ships?

I cannot see the cruise industry putting up with such a hassle. If the 10 -15 cruise ships that dock at Chalotte Amalie every week decide to go to other ports of call there won't be a politician left standing. It looks like BoatUS has fallen into the trap of reporting and giving importance to some of these dead end legislative efforts that are routinely approved by some of these island politicians. Wait six months and nobody will remember it.
