We are entering the Newport to Ensenada race this year for the first time. One of the boat requirements is the MOB pole, horse collar, and strobe light. Well I dont have one. Anyone got a line on where I might get a good price on a setup OR any San Diego area sailors know where I might borrow or rent one? Thanks Rick

Nice N Easy

MOB

Any marine store should have the horse collar and strobe. These are not overly expensive, and you should have them anyway. Matter of fact, you are required to have a throwable life ring, ( horse collar ) on board at all times, and should have one even if it isn't required. The man overboard pole is pretty easy to make yourself, our of PVC tubing.

MOB

Thanks Nice, I have a lifesling and a throwable device. We use autoinflate PFDs and jacklines when we go "out of the bay". I dont have one because of that AND I know this is a bit lame but... I dont have a backstay and I think they look crappy lashed to a sternrail etc. Cheapest I have found for the whole package is around $400. Ouch Cheers Rick

Need advice on safety equip for MAC

Funny you should post this thread. With all of the solo sailors going overboard I am becoming more aware of the importance of safety devices. I have a few questions. Where do Mac25 owners attach their jacklines? How long should the tether be? Short enough so as to prevent you from falling off or long enough to reach the cockpit in case you do go overboard. I sail with a tillermaster and have nightmares of the boat sailing off into the sunset without me. I am not in the greatest shape. In fact many years ago we chartered a hobie 18 to Isla Mujeres and went snorkeling on one of the coral reefs. Found out after getting in the water that their ladder was broken. They had to help me aboard. It was like landing Shamu, come to think of it Shamu would have been embarassed. How difficult is it to use a rope ladder or should I invest in a permanently mounted folding ladder on the transom. Too cold right now to practice MOB drills but I will definitely do them this spring. Anything else you might think of will be appreciated.

Yeah Bill it is

Actually the first mate has made sure its worth a bit more than that :) Wonder why she doesnt want to get one. Just kidding.. I just wanted to see if any one here knew of any alternatives or a really nice say all in one setup before I just got buy one. Mounting the system where say you throw the pole which releases the horse collar which feeds all into the drink and turns on the strobe. That sort of thinking. Rick

What class

are you looking at? Need a TV, micro, dvd, beer cooler for the cruzing class? How about an A-sail? I saw you put a pole on. Heck maybe we should enter. Do you have the SC PHRA rating? and all of that stuff? Man I'm a total novice reguarding this "racing stuff". Dwain PS: Have you checked ebay for the pole? Also Minnie's (sp) up in Costa Mesa has a ton of "stuff" might warrant a call.

Dwain, here is where we are...

Wifey actually crewed on a 40 footer last year. They DNF because the wind was sooooo sheety! To get the ball rolling you just go to the NOSA sight (NPT to ENS) and start checking off the items. Kinda steps you through all the paperwork. We are gonna do the crus-no spin this year. If the wind sucks I want to be able to use the "iron genny". Have all the comforts of home already. And Bill, I found the Forespar SP-2 Overboard Safety Package with the overboard pole at Landfall Nav for $495. Best deal so far. Are you really serious about crewing? Two easy days up to Newport, two long days to Ensenada, awards ceremony, and sail back. 5-6 days tops. Cheers Rick btw Dwain, registering yourself is the "sail-litically correct" way to be here now. Phil has made it pretty easy.

I really

was interested. Then I thought about entering our boat also. Then I checked out the website and found; we'd need to join a yacht club, get sail #s and install them, join SC PHRA, and we would need that pole also. That was all doable, so I checked the dates and checked with the wife. End of Party! I was reminded that the mother-in-law was coming to visit from Chicago that week and I was the one that "approved" the dates. So I was interested but, will not be available. Also before anyone asks, the mother-in-law doesn't do "crew". Good Luck to you and have a good time. Dwain
