Tony B. I would say what's more fun working for

wages or working on your boat? I have found a way to made a living that doesn't take all of my time. So I can choose what I do with my time when I am not working and not sailing. For folk that have to work all of the time they have a different problem. After you pass about 35000 per year you are paying about 45 per cent out for taxes. Then if you have to hire work done that you could do yourself you must pay the taxes on the money before you pay the hired help.

I make things for a living, If I am not on the job

my time is boat time. I have built companionways (three) toe rails, hatch slides (two sets) handrails ( three sets) Steps, head vanity, Storage shelves, and misc. other stuff. I have also taken on all sewing. Bimini's ( three including bending the frame) Campanionway curtians (four) Sailcovers (three with 2" velcrow closures and multicolored) boom tents( three, the last of nylon for quick up and down), Reworked my genoa, remover the hanks and tape, installed #6 lufftape. Recut it and reworked the head. Recut a purchased mainsail, recut the luff and installed a new leech line, reworked the headand tack and reef point. Fiberglas and bottom painting, tillers (4)and tiller tamers, one rudder, two trailers, multipul halyards, dock lines, anchor lines, and tow lines. I have spent thousands on materials.... I have no idea how much I have saved, I know that when I am done that it is what I wanted. Ross, your wild, I like to cook, too. Landsend, I make Pain killers, and rum and coke. r.w.landau

I DO HAVE TO ADMIT,,RW

That I might have gotten carried away a little bit. I did meet a super nice German immigrant of 77 years old. He was a 27 year old working in a airplane plant in Germany when he climbed in a ME-262 flew it to Switzerland made his way to France and was allowed to come to America. Married, set up a cabinet making shop, raised his family and still works every day and tells me how much he loves this country. Yeah he may have been a little pricey but the work done was as you expect precise. And yes I will take your advise rw and "ASK". This forum has a lot of good people who are willing to share their knowledge and experiences. I'm glad to be a part of all of you. Thanks. Sailing in NOT a matter of life or death, I IS more important than that. Chuck R

I’m cheap !

I’ve made my own custom fuse buses, my own instrument mounts, my own holders for boat hooks, whip finished my lines, monkey fisted my throwing line….a bunch’a stuff. Then there’s general maintenance, I’ve never paid anybody to do anything on any boat I’ve had. Some people sail because they love it and can afford a pricy ride, the rest of us sail because we’re too cheap to buy gas and are too lazy to paddle! Ferg
