We are real good with making coffee onboard, but how about toast, or buns? For toast, we have a wire and metal thing, like a camping toast maker. We put it over the CNG stove burner and end up getting a piece of dry bread with some burnt corners, or it never get brown. Yuck. As for semi-dried up buns or rolls, we have a pot w/lid, with another pot inside of it. The inner pot has holes all around it. We put some water in the outer pot, and put the buns in the inner pot. Then put the whole thing on a stove burner, and the steam softens and warms the bread. Not too bad. So, dinner rolls and ok, but I would like to hear what you do to make good toast, while on the hook of course?

Salamander broiler does perfect job!

Our 2-burner propane Plastimo unit has an over fired radiant broiler built into the bottom compartment (restaurants call them salamander broilers). It does a fantasic job of toast, garlic bread, bruschetta, trout, onion soup, etc. etc.

Making Toast

I have often wondered the same question. My thought was to lightly butter the inside of a frying pan and then, when the pan is nice and hot, lay the bread in the pan. I think this should ultimately "toast" the bread.

toast

you got it! Butter the bread then put it in a hot pan, makes great toast! just like doing grilled cheese, it's completely different than regular toast and tastes much better in my opinion, sprinkle cinnomon and sugar on it, or anything you like on toast. It's so much better that way that I haven't used my 'real' toaster for a long time. and it's one less contraption to figure out a place to store. I tried a few of the camp/boat toast makers on the market, and found that most of them produce dry scortched bread, something almost but not quite toast, more like large brown croutons. (like toast, hate stale bread!) Ken.

I call it Texas toast

butter the bread and throw it into a hot skillet for a few seconds, flip it over for a few more until it is browned to suit your taste. Steaks are good cooked this way too. Well maybe no butter but it is good cooked in a very hot pan. We had standing rib roast to die for on Christmas. Take a big handful of garlic, a tablespoon each of pepper and salt, and a teaspoon of crushed rosemary, then mush it up into a paste. Spread it onto the 4 pound standing rib roast and cook for 2 hours at 320F. Slice it thin, make some gravy and it is a wonderful meal.

Try one of the campfire hamburger thingies

with long handles and hold it over an open flame of a burner. I just use the broiler in my oven.

Make Toast Same Way as Ken

My wife makes toast the same way as Ken and it works great. Since the frying pan is already warmed up after making eggs there is little added energy needed to make toast. Nuke the jam in the microwave to knock the chill off and add black coffee .... mmm good! Making bread - we haven't figured an easy solution for that one yet since we only have a broiler.

bread

Make pancakes, any receipe that works for muffins works for pancakes and English muffins are baked on top of the stove. Quote; Making bread - we haven't figured an easy solution for that one yet since we only have a broiler.

I completely agree

with the hot pan and lightly buttered bread approach. Wonderful enough to pile hot ravioli on top of straight from the tin.
