Maintaining Volvo M.D. 2020

I don’t know much about maintaining diesels. I do know, however that it’s very difficult for me to find anybody who either can, or is willing to work on my engine.

So for better or worse, I will try this myself.

I have coolant leaking from someplace. I suspect it’s probably a hose.

My question is this. Can I simply use some type of automotive hose to replace the hoses that handle the coolant? Or do I need some fancy hose that has to be obtained from Volvo?

I realize that this is kind of a basic question and this is my first foray, but probably not my last, and to engine maintenance.

Thanks.

The hoses are formed so I would say stick with original .You dont want any kinks . Your engine is actually a Perkins M20 and Perkins parts are allot cheaper.

Yup, I agree with the above and the cheapest place to get OEM parts for a Perkins is "Parts 4 Engines " in the UK

I actually get parts from a Caterpillar dealer, they bought Perkins in 1998

Before buying anything (unless you KNOW that a hose is leaking), first tighten every hose clamp you can find on your engine.

I was chasing a coolant leak on my 2GM20F engine and finally just started tightening every hos e clamp I could find...and viola! The leak stopped and my coolant level stabilized.

Coolant pressure tester. Rent from auto parts store. Attach to pressure cap. Pump it up and watch for pissing coolant.

I knew MD 2020 from early college days .. "Mad Dog 20-20" a fine additive for a "Jungle Juice" recipe
From the WIKI:
MD 20/20 (often called by its nickname Mad Dog) is an American fortified wine. MD 20/20 has an alcohol content that varies by flavor from 13% to 18% (with most of the 18% varieties discontinued, although Red Grape is reportedly available in 18% ABV). The MD actually stands for its producer: Mogen David. Originally, 20/20 stood for 20 oz @ 20% alcohol. Currently, MD 20/20 is not sold in 20 oz bottles nor at 20% alcohol by volume.

I have read that the 2020 can get corrosion in the exhaust area of the heat exchanger. You may want to look in that area.

Oooh....I got a headache just thinking about that stuff. A favorite of the Portland State University sailing team. (Drinking team with a sailing problem.)
