What is the advantage to having a mainsheet traveler. I'm thinking of ordering one on my new boat but not sure if money is worth it. I wont be doing any racing. Thanks in advance. bobl nh

I have harken traveler on my arch on my hunter 290 and its great, its allows you to spill off wind in really high wind conditions,instead of reefing or letting out the main and cuts down on the heeling which my wife likes much better. It allows the boat to sail much flatter wihout doing alot of work it really makes sailing much easyer,I do alot of single handed sailing with it. nick

........... has anyone ever installed a mainsheet traveller on an existing fibreglass arch ? Opted not to get one on our 1999 H310 and now regret it. If the means of attachment is through a buried aluminum plate like the deck cleats are, it should be a piece of cake. If the factory installed traveller was bolted on before the arch was assembled ......... forget it. Ideas ? ? ? ? ? ? s/v Island Hunter

I have found hunter to be very helpful asking questions when I was adding extra stuff on my 290,I've seen travelers on hunters with fiberglass arch but never really looked to see how it was done,give it a shot and ask here on this forum or hunter or dealers,I never give up until I get the answers on a project that I want to add to my boat,if you do get it go with the harken system that they use on the hunters,I am sure its not cheap but it works great,but whats cheap on a boat.

A mainsheet traveler is a wonderfully handy, and much needed, sail control device. Not only does it allow you to spill wind by moving it to leward when the wind is really up, but it also allows you to increase or decrease the draft of the sail so that you can optimize the main's shaper according to conditions. Don't leave home without it....

If there is an aluminum strip to screw into this should be a breeze. If you get a Harken traveler, they will custom drill the track to the same centers as the original one (what could be easier). We replaced the original traveler on our H'31 ('85) several years ago and had the track custom drilled. It could not be much easier.

And Steve, I installed one that uses hidden bolts
that are slide 'to fit' inside the track. No drilling, no exposed screw heads and less chance of corrosion. (Harken, of course) There are a couple of pictures of it on the 3rd film strip of my web site. bob, these are 'gotta have' items. They're not toys, any more than the boat is. Do it.
