MainSheet Traveler: Suggestions welcome

Since purchase of s/v No Worries, I have hated the mainsheet traveler setup. The track is mounted on the bridgedeck, and connects to the boom via bale near boom end. This is needed to clear the bimini, and such it leans astern. The current traveler has the cam cleats ON the traveler facing down. So adjusting the car is cumbersome.

Post up pictures of your traveler system. I am satisfied with the mainsheet itself. Purchae is 2:1 on the traveler, which seems sufficient. I am thinking adding an additional turning block on the cockpit gunwales with a cleat there. Perhaps a new traveler?

Can't post a picture here just a URL to a web site. My pics of the traveler on my O'day 28 are saved on my computer. E-mail me at glover96@comcast.net and I will send the pics I have along to you. Also there are some pics on this site of my boat under way which show the traveler but at a distance.

Mike, we are actually closer to Tawas than our Marina. We should arrange reciprocal sailing days: Lake Michigan for Lake Huron.

I couldn't get the search feature to pull up your posts, so e-mailed you. Thanks for the input.

OTHERS: What advantages do you see in traveler setups? cleats with the traveler or on the traveler ends? I can see a single point of adjustment as a +, while that point traverses the cockpit as a -. End of traveler adds extra bulk which is already on the bridge-deck taking up valuable napping area, but never moves.

What do you like of your current setup and what would you change?

call Guido at Garhauer Marine

Garhauer folks are incredible. They can get you a system that works - I retrofitted my 302 traveler several years ago. They stand behind their work and their prices are fair. I think they equip all new Catalinas with Garhauer hardware.

Guido knows everything about everything.

I thought I might jump in on the tail of this thread. Just a heads up, but I went to repair this track on an OD28 a couple days ago, and this is what I found. The bloke had this detach while standing her on its ear, and he says when it turned loose, it was a super nasty piece of shrapnel flying violently about the boat before he got lucky and snagged it. Take a look at number two. A damn self tapping screw that the heads match, and it was no more than a half inch of threads, and I'm being generous. I'm not picking, I swear I ain't. But if I had one of these, I would pull every plug on the bottom side and make sure it is the 1/4"-20 screw(bolt, it's technically a screw), and a nut on it. Even so, this bolt had only a standard S.S. washer for backing..

And I too hope Garhauer is the ticket. This main track is a goner.

Wow, that's scary. Was the screw in a place with very limited access? Looks like somebody just plain cheated.

I have a Harken on mine and its been moved over the companion way hatch. The real key to the system is the track risers. These are cast aluminum and super heavy duty. What you can't see from this side is I have a curved peice of tubing on the other side and that is where the rollup window from the dodger attaches. The whole thing works pretty well.

Thanks for sharing CP...My track is a different cross section. I can imagine track flying around would be a mess!!!

Ward, that track is laying right on the bridge deck in front of the companionway. The heads of the screws looked identical, so there was no way of telling without pulling the bungs from inside. And so short even. Not that it would have helped any, but it could have been a lot longer. And some kind of backing plates.

That bridged traveler is what he has intimated would be his choice, and by the present location I would tend to agree, what with stepping past the main sheet on the way in or out. (Nice setup by the way). Truth is, this may have broke the camels back. He is now looking with his left eye for another boat. This guy knows no fear, seriously. He will sail the DOG $&@: out of a boat, and that one shook him.
It would me.
