Mainsheet Size

I'm going to replace the mainsheet on my 1972 23'. The old sheet is 7/16" thick, but I've been told that that is way to big. One reference guide suggests 5/16" for boats that size. Does that sound about right to you all? Seems to me that something much smaller might be hard on the hands. It was also suggested that instead of having a loop made into one end (to attach to the camcleat/pulley - like the old one), to just "whip" a loop into it. Any recommendations on the approach? I don't mind paying a little extra; I just want it to be as safe as possible and look sharp too! Thanks in advance for your help!
