Mainsheet Routing Question

I have an 86TR with the old curved traveler. The mainsheet on this boat is adjusted from the cockpit right over the companionway and utilizes a cam cleat to hold the sheet. I have not seen any others like this. I have seen several boats which have the mainsheet run through a turning block on the boom and back to a winch on the cabin top. Can anyone tell me the story here? I suspect it was part of the earlier design and later changed. If so, has anyone re-routed the mainsheet for use with a winch? (it is difficult to get leverage when you are reachin over an open companionway) Any and all advice or experience is appreciated greatly. This is the best site I have found for cat 30 info. Keep it up!

re-route

I have an 84 Cat 30 with the curved traveler (cursed thing looks pretty, but its a pain to make any real use of) and the turning block on the mast with a deck oragnizer that returns the sheet to a cabin top mounted winch. I like the system, but didn't like the additional friction added by all of the turns - especially with the blocks that came with the boat. I just bought a replacement traveler and replacement mainsheet blocks at http://catalinadirect.com/c-30%20rigging%20kit.html and the stuff looks great. The price was also extremely reasonable! You might want to check it out. I think my boat will be much easier to handle as a result of the change. If you would like to see the mainsheet routing on my boat, send me your email address, and I will send some scanned photos to you. Doug doug@dweldon.com
