A friend recently gave me a few (6-10) copies of the Catalina Mainsheet magazine.
I was surprised how FEW articles there were pertaining to the Capri 22.

The magazines seemed to be in the 2010-2014 date range.

Anybody here presently get the magazine ?

Re: Mainsheet

I was a tech editor for the Cat 25/Capri 25, Cat 250 association.. I was surprised there was not any submissions going on for the Capri 22, especially since the Capri 22 is still made.

I've owned, a Capri 14.2, Capri 22, and a Capri 25, and was members of each association (truth in advertising I am now a member of the S2 7.9 association)... all of the associations had great forums, frankly this is the best forum run of them all (and has the most information). That being said, this is the most disorganized association of them all too. There does not appear to be a driver to create bylaws, race conformity, commodore, vice commodore, treasurer, etc...

I bet money Patrick would LOVE to have a real association form, so that he could be "demoted" to webmaster, and actually be paid (at least enough to make back his investment in server space).

I believe the association dues for the Cat 25 association were like $28 a year, reasonable when you think of what you get (which includes the Mainsheet, which is now I believe strictly an electronic publication)...

If you have the mainsheet from 2014, and 2015, you'll likely see tech articles from myself, and from others that I got to edit. The really cool ones were from a guy who sailed his Capri 25 in the single handed transpac. Super cool sailor.

What drives a great association are strong members, willing to make a difference. Any of you willing to step up and design, implement and restructure the association? Sounds like there is at least a few of you looking to do that. My bet is Patrick has the documents of the original charter for the NA.

By the way, if you re-establish the association, you'd work with Frank Butler and more likely Gerry Douglas, in getting subscriptions to the electronic quarterly of the Mainsheet. Sadly the "Mainsheet" (which is a manufacturers own publication for owners of their boats) is a Unique publication that I do not believe has been replicated in the industry anywhere else. I first became aware of it, when I got my Capri 14.2 Lemme tell you, it was really neat to get details, and stories all related to boats from 12 feet to 42 feet all from the same company. Talk about laying a path in front of you, for upgrades through your 3 footitis.

I've not come back to the Catalina product line... although I've considered it several times, including the Capri 30, the Capri 26, and the Catalina 28. Someday I may consider a Catalina 34 or 36, with my eye on the 320, and 310 as alternatives. Just the past few weeks I've considered a Catalina 275, but when I found out its performance is about the same as a Catalina 27, I thought twice (was hoping for something between a Capri 22, and a J80, on paper you'd think it'd be about as fast as an S2 7.9 or J25, but it isn't).

Anyway... build it, and see who you can get to come.

Re: Mainsheet

I would be interested in helping out. I'm new to Capri 22 ownership and was looking to join the association until I found out it was dormant. It would be cool to restart. I think there may be lots of folks who would want to join even if just to get the Catalina magazine.

Re: Mainsheet

Sorry Patrick, and I know it's a Pain in your keester, but you may have the makings (at least the embers to fan) of a real bonafide class association forming here.

You wouldn't have original One design class rules handy, or original association info available anywhere would you?

If you folks want help setting everything up, I may be able to get Russ Johnson over at http://www.catalina-capri-25s.org/officers.asp to help... he's a real motivator, and likely knows the steps you need to take to get everything restarted.

Re: Mainsheet

That would be cool. Let me know how I can help. My day job involves lots of shuffling paper so I'm pretty good with organizing stuff, writing bylaws, drafting correspondence, etc. I'm ready to help. :)

Re: Mainsheet

Ok, I stirred this pot, so I'll at least get you in touch with the present commodore of the Cat 25 club.

both of you email me shnool @ yahoo and I'll forward your emails to Russ Johnson, with an intro message asking for help getting the association "re-formed."

For the record, I've got nothing to gain, nor no reason to be part of this association (except lend a hand here or there)... I'm likely moving on from even my S2 now, but it just seems a shame that the Capri 22 doesn't have an association, its an active designed boat from Catalina, and its well loved by its owners. Its also a likely starter boat for people learning to sail (who don't wanna get wet)... Its a step UP boat for dinghy sailors, and a step down boat for those who used to cruise, but just want a good sailing boat, that is less work to day sail. So its a well liked boat by newbies and experienced sailors, so this should be the strongest group Catalina has.

Are there any CP22 based on Long Island Sound? My boat (#1139) is based in Mamaroneck, NY. I'm on a constant look-out but so far never saw another CP22 out there..... Feeling lonely.....

If one does not race against other CP-22s and does not care about Mainsheet, is there any benefit of an association? The CP-22 is a great boat and has a healthy online presence already.

There seems to be a healthy population of Capris on the Toms River in NJ. Particularly Pine Beach Yacht Club. I am just a beginner with PHRF in the Toms River area. I wonder if its possible to get enough capri 22s together in this area for a regional regatta. I definitely see them coming and going on the water. I am knee deep in the yacht club I belong to ( Beachwood Yacht Club) so time is a premium I cannot afford right now, but I am certainly interested in being a member of any association pertaining to the Capri 22. There are 3 Capri 22's a few mile from you @ Horseshoe Harbor Yacht Club. They all belong to the club and are leased out to members.

I'd like to mention that one of the best benefits of the association you are already using, this forum.

Another benefit is Catalina will usually work with you to get acknowledged by Boats US, and WestMarine etc... for association discounts.

You'd have to ask over at the Cat 25 association as to how they managed all that, but for $28 a year, they ran the website, got the mainsheet, and got 10% discounts on Boats US, and several other services...

It was one of those things, that seemed like a no brainer.

The S2 association managed to acquire a bunch of masts, and booms and stored in the association name at about COST... that's HUGE! There is power in bulk buying.

I was the commodore for the Capri 26 national fleet for several years.
I retired my flag when we sold Temptress.

I can tell you this - the reason for the lack of articles in Mainsheet is because you didn't submit them.

Granted we are not all professional writers.
But that's how articles get in the magazine.
YOU write something, take some pictures,
and submit it.

It's as simple (and difficult) as that.

To reinstate the Capri 22 group we need to elect officers and we ALL need to make a commitment
to providing material for the magazine. Every two months something has to be ready to print.

Stories can ange from technical articles on how you repaired/upgraded/rearranged something,
equipment that you have tried out, rigging techniques, sailing tips...

Or can be about people and places - trips, guests, races, friends, and family experiences.

But it you guys wait for someone else to write a story, there won't be any in the fleet rag.

THIS group has been almost dead for quite a while.
That was why we started the Facebook page - try to get some interest going again.
I hope it has helped, at least.

So, who's up?

For the record the mainsheet is quarterly, so every 3 months...
There is a tech sectional (repair pull out) and also fluff/regular cruising/destination type articles...
The mainsheet does not require articles every quarter, but one every quarter would be awesome.

A couple of articles a quarter should be doable for the CP 22 group. Does anyone have a copy of the bylaws for the association. They will tell us how to hold meetings elect officers and everything else from a legal nature that we would need to know for restarting the association. I volunteer to be secretary :)

Times have changed. 25 years ago when our club hosted one of the 6 regattas on the Hudson River (HRYRA.ORG) we would get 13+ J-24s on the line.
Now we are lucky if we get one showing up in the PHRF fleet. Had a Lightning fleet prior to that.

The PHRF fleet kept "forcing" people to buy boats with lower PHRF numbers to be competitive. ( Due to the current we race in there is a definite bias to the lower PHRF boats in each fleet. ) So you only see 2-3 boats do the 6 regatta circuit.

I was more interested in seeing articles in the Mainsheet pertaining to maintenance & upgrades.

Surprisingly though, the Ensign fleet at my club is strong.

Many yacht clubs are struggling to survive. A few have closed. We added an "affiliate membership" to get kayaks, canoes, an just social members in. This has worked quite successfully.
