I'm going to need a new mainsail for my 1983 C-22.I was wondering if a sail with full battens would be better choice for me.The area where I sail is usually light air. What are the characteristics of a full batten sail as opposed to a standard sail?Thank-You in advance for your help.

Full Battens

Full battens provide a larger roach that should improve performance. However, that aside, a full batten sail does not have any particular advantage over a partial full batten (top two battens full, bottom two battens partial) sail or a partial batten sail. I think the consensus is that partial full batten sails provide the best performance. This is because the full battens on top generate a larger roach, while the partial battens on the bottom permit better sail shape. Full battens will promote sail longevity, which is the primary reason people use them. Experience has shown they do not improve performance. One should also consider a loose foot versus a bolt rope foot. I personally am in the loose foot camp. I just ordered a loose footed full batten main from Catalina Direct that I think is a good value.

i agree with bayard. combination full / short with loose foot is very fast. i have used standard, full, combination, bolt rope, and loose for over thirty years. go with the combination and loose foot.

full batten main

Full batten main will keep its shape longer my main is full batten with a loose foot the loose foot gives you better control of the camber in the lower portion of the sail. Rick Ellis production Manager Hallett Sails
