I'm thinking of having a window put in my main so I can see my jib telltales better. Is there a downside to this? I'm concerned with things like creasing since the sail is furled on the boom for 4 to 5 months during our season.Should I be looking at any particular material?

...three years according to my sailmaker. I had one put on a jib and it was flawless after two years so I suspect three is conservative. Remember, however, the characteristics as to stretch, elasticity and abrasion differ, so I wouldn't unless you decide you really need it. I am trying to live without one on my new jib, but haven't concluded if I am giving up too much visibility for singlehanded safety. Rick D.

Why?

would you want to weaken your main powerplant and chance a torn out mainsail? Sails are expensive and visability should be a problem maybe with a jib or genoa but not a main. To see the jib telltails you should be on the windward side of the boat. windward of the main with a clear shot to seeing the headstay. Maybe you should move your telltails.
