Winch

If your's is broke, replace with same size. The stock winch is large enough to handle the main. Do you use a winch handle? Add a couple turning blocks, longer halward and mount winch on cabin top to handle mainsail from cockpit. Same size winch will work there also.

thanks for the information, the winch is not broken it's just getting old, maybe it just needs a good lube job. i like your idea about using a installing a winch on the top. have you done this and where exactly do you think it would be best? thanks again bernie

Catalina 22 mast winch

The Catalina 22 mast winch, assuming on the port side of the mast, is for the jib. The main does not require a winch.

install at the backend of the cabin, so you can stand in the cockpit and operate it. You’ll need a jamb cleat between you and the winch or a rope clutch, this could go on the other side of the winch. You need a turning block at the base of the mast to aim the halyard across the cabin top towards the main stay and a deck organizer on the cabin roof to turn the halyard back towards the winch. Make sure you through bolt the winch to the roof.

?

the winch is on the starboard side of the mast and it is for the mainsail. for the jib we have two #6 winches that are on each side of the cockpit. not a big deal, just wanted to clairify

Correct

But on my 1986 C22 we do not have a winch for the main. We pull it up without one. As we get older, if we ever need a winch I would put it on the starboard side of the poptop forward of the camcleat that holds the main halyard.
