I had an unfortunate accident two weeks ago and the result was a torn mainsail. I was wondering if there is any possibility that it might be repaired and where that might take place? I was also wondering if there is a market where I might purchase a used sail? I am not a racer so I am not very picky about my mainsail. Are there any options that I am not seeing? I have checked into new and they are very expensive so an alternate would be welcomed. Thanks in advance for any consideration anyone might have for me. Patrick

First: Sail Care is very good and responsible as they have repaired and cleaned both my jib and mainsail. Question: how large is the rip. There is a dacron tape 3" by 15' sold by West Marine and others. Cut to required length, peel-off back and stick on both sides of mailsail. Then on your home sewing machine, sew around the perimiter and then make a X or several X's. Cost: about $7.00 plus your time. If the sail is blown out- make sail bags. Good Luck

Dacron tape

I have a friend who manages the water sports at a large Jamaican resort. They have a large number of inexperienced sailors who take out the small sailboats in gusty conditions. The result is an occasional ripped sail. They use the method that Ian spoke of and many of the sails have several repairs on them and still perform fine.

Explain

A rip in a main is relatively easy to repair at home. You can use a class 15 home type sewing machine, too. I do sail repair here in Houston and have easily repaired a 9 foot tear across the bottom of a sail. Email me at Captronbob@yahoo.com and I can tell you how to do it or if you want to pay the shipping I will repair it for you for the cost of materials. Tape is good for a temporary fix, but the rip should be sewn up as soon as possible... Ron

Tape

I used that that tape in an emergencey repair on my SJ-24 Main one time, then took it in and put Heat Tape, (some 3-M Upholstery Tape that is Heat Activated), the we used the X by X, or Double Zig Zag over the Rip and Tape Edges. Cause it was an older sail, 9 years, I did it that way. I got 1.5 more Care Free years out of it before Hurricane Isadore totalled her, but the Sail was still good! A home machine can do it easily, and is alot easier becuase most Home Machines have a Zig-Zag stitch, we used a Commercial Bostitch on mine and had to Zig-Zag Manually.

Sailrite makes a zig-zag machine with a walking foot that really makes the job simple. I put the machine on a skateboard and the walking foot pulls it along the material. I pin the sail down on a piece of plywood first to insure everything matches up, then use double face tape to hold the patch in place. The whole job takes about an hour and I charge ten dollar a foot. Not bad for a hour of work, huh? Ron
