Our 272 has a Doyle Stack Pak and we were having trouble getting the sail up more than down...one night while dreaming I dreamed that if I would loosen the main sheet and the boom vang and essentially raise the boom to dead level with the topping lift, it would open up the sail cover and take the pressure off the slugs completely....It was a good dream, it works perfectly now....the downward slant of the sail and boom was causing the slugs to bind.....plus the sail just falls in the bag for the most part...is of course held in place with the lazy jacks.. .....try it see how it works....Pat

This is what is happening on my sail too. Batton ends fall quicker and jam. ...
Terry:

Understand. Maybe someone knows a trick to keep the full batten ends from falling first and jamming?

A common problem with sails that have a tack angle of less than 90 degrees. You HAVE to either ease the sheet and let the boom raise or ease the outhaul. If you play around with a paper triangle you will see what is going on.
With that said, I have the roller "slugs" on my full batten main and we just love the things. Only problem I ever had was one of the attaching screws backed out while the sail was up and we could not lower the main. docked at the end and went aloft with a screwdriver to fix it. We have since secured the screws with red locktite.

Bill:

Didn't fully occur to me. I normally use my toping lift to raise the boom to somewhat above 90 degrees before raising or lowering my mainsail. But not always for the lowering. I'll pay more attention to making sure that my boom is as high as possible before dousing. And observe the hopefully reduced tendency for the full batten ends to jam.

Thanks.

I know i am beating this to death but the more i search the more i find that might help. I,did not know that some manufacturers make special sail slides for the mast for full batten mains. I see seldon and bainbridge both do but am unable to find stores that sell them on line or a local sail loft that might steer me to purchasing these. I have replaced quite a few slides over the past years and just used what i could find at WM. Anyone know of a good/ national/ brand name sail loft in south west florida. . .
