Hi - we suspect our mainsail is not original as it has a clip at the
clew which does not fit into the groove along the top of the boom. We
are keen to inprove our performance using this sail however, and are
keen for any tips/advice re: rigging an outhaul and downhaul for a
Vega. Also there are two small blocks ona traveller on the left side
of the aft boom - are these for a reefing line??? Confused of Bangor!
Thanks for any help you can give.

Hi - Bangor in Wales or bangor in N Ireland?

I have the "reefing bar" with two turning blocks on stbd side of boom
at aft end. (Stbd side so I am on stbd tack when reefing and am
therefore stand-on vessel... :) )

It is for the reefing lines as you say - lines terminate at end of boom
- up to cringle on leech of sail - down to turning block on "reefing
bar" then forward through fairleads on boom to cleats where reefing
lines are secured when reef is in.

for some photos of my setup

Hi

Cant help with the clip by the clew.

The two small blocks on the track at the aft end of the boom will be the
fittings for two sets of slab reefing (Jiffy reefing in the US).

Cheers

The clip at the end of the clew may be a 'sail slug'. If it doesn't
fit the groove in the boom, it's quite easy to attach one that will,
available from a sailmaker or over the internet at somewhere like

The blocks on the boom side are for 'slab' aka 'jiffy' reefing, far
superior to the old roller reefing IMHO.
