a diagram would be best
A bit hard to describe or to be sure how your boat is rigged. Line should be cleated off (for reefing)at gooseneck end, then travels through boom & out end up to first reef point then back down to boom to a fixed point. The line may also go through the reef point on the luff(at bolt rope)or that reef point may just be put on a hook on the boom. To reef-ease off main by luffing then drop sail a little past what you need to reef(take up on topping lift a bit to keep boom from dropping if possible). Then pull down sail & hook the reef point at the mast, then pull/winch in reef line that will snug the reef point to the back of the boom. If the front reef point is part of the system no hook is used & winching the reef line does it all. Then pull the main back up snug. This is generally called Jiffy Reefing & can be done alone if rigged properly, although 2 people make it easier. Look for some diagrams in books or find a boat that has it. A sailmaker could also show you how to rig it if you need a new sail or need to have reef point put in your sail.
