Yesterday, I experienced an problem with lowering my mainsail. The wire halyard jumped out of one of the sheves and got stuck between the masthead and the sheve. No amount of pulling or coaxing would loosen the sticking halyard. Has anyone else had this problem?

Halyard Problem

Yes, I had the same problem last year. I believe it was caused by: We were sailing in about 25 knots of wind. When we decided we had had enough of that, we lowered the sails, doing the Genoa first. During this operation, we inadvertently allowed the main halyard to fly loosely and it was "ballooned " way out on the port side, as the halyard was quite slack. We did not lose the halyard because we clip it to an appropriate line on the lower mast. But, again it was very slack and flying out to port in a large arc. We doused the main o.k., but the next time we tried to bend the main we discovered it was stuck. Further investigation by the boatyard revealed it had indeed become entangled in the sheave/block assembly at the top of the mast. The solution was to have a crane from the boatyard recover the halyard for us, and while up there investigate the set-up. An expensive lesson, and now we try to keep the halyards taut to the mast at all times!
