Really?!? I single hand about 80% of the time. Whether with someone or by myself, I take the sail cover off before I leave the slip.

??? please explain... 'think since I'll be single handing, it'd be nice to not have to remove the sail from the mast and put it back.'
Why would there be any need to remove the main whether you single hand or not ? The point of having a sail cover is to protect the main from UV while its not in use.
You also need to be able to lower and flake the main singlehanded. You may need to drop the main behind a lee shore. Entering a marina in a blow with your main still up can be problematic.

On the link it says it's for J-boat type sails where the main comes off the mast. I assume that means it comes completely out of the track on the mast. I haven't seen a J-boat so I don't know if it'll work.

OK, that's known as a horse blanket and it's used on mains with a luff bolt rope instead of sail slides. The main is dropped and the bolt rope removed from the mast grove. The sail is then rolled up and tied to the boom. This is basically done on true race boats not your type boat.
No, it wont work for you.

Mine is so basic that I can't imagine you not being able to sew it up in an hour for just the cost of a few yards of sunbrella and a few plastic clips. When I go to the boat this weekend I'll draw you a template if you're up to a simple sewing project.

Thanks!
Actually, if you wouldn't mind getting the two measurements in the pic I attached, that would be a big help. We've been having 40 mph gusts here and I think it's a little dangerous to put the main on the mast for measurements in such conditions. And I don't have the old mainsail cover to go off of.
I measured the boom and took some measurements of the sail, but something more accurate would be nice. And I'm not afraid of a little DIY :D

Will do. I'll actually pull the cover off and give you dimensions of the actual material from the seam on top down to the hem starting at the mast and back every 1ft until I reach the clew/topping lift. That way you can sketch out the curve on your material more accurately.

Sailrite Dodger

Just completed a dodger for a 260. I purchased a how to video from Sailrite and then made my own design. It uses the same snaps as the original.

Sailrite web site has lots of how to free videos as well.

This was my second canvas project. First being a sleeve for the roller furling head sail.

Your main sail cover should be a great project..

Wow, Very nice work on your dodger. It'll be our upcoming off season Summer project along with a mainsail stack pack similar to the Sailrite plan. We pull our 260 out in June when the wind in the tropics goes light and the heat turns to broil. My hesitation with doing a dodger last season was the thought of sailing the boat while looking through it all the time so I spent the time rigging a big furling gennaker and bow sprit instead.

I had wanted to zip a transitional panel from a dodger into our over sized bimini to create a full cockpit enclosure, especially overhead for shade. I also thought side panels around the cockpit would be a nice option but might be too much for our moderate winters. Your pics helped to visualize some thoughts I had so thanks again for posting.

Have a great Summer season. Mike

thank you so much for taking time out of your weekend to measure that! I'll put up pics of it when I'm done

As promised, here's pics of the mainsail cover I made. I'm not an experienced seamstress at all so if I can do it, anyone can. Thanks to all for your help!

I'm going to gray canvas so up next will be a new boot for the bimini. Eventually she'll have black bottom paint, gray and red stripes.

Very nice. You'll be happy with the companionway cover. It completely stopped my rainy day leaks. I also went with stern rail seat canvas after I refinished my teak. It slides over the seat from behind and velcros across the front. And don't forget a wheel cover to keep your wheel eqt dry and sun free.

Maybe I should have just make a giant boat sized canvas cover instead of all the pieces;).

Your Loos gauge should be coming UPS any day. Good luck and have a great season.
