Mainsail battens w/main furling in mast

I just purchased a Beneteau 40 (2008) and on its maiden "voyage" we had a problem with the main binding when hauling it out. it was folding on itself about three feet from the top of the mast. My dealer was prompt to remedy the problem when we found out the top two vertical battens were causing the binding. They were removed and it goes in and out now without a problem. The general consensus on the dock was that I should not notice much difference in the shape of the main under sail and many remove these battens to prevent the problems I was having. As I have not yet sailed it without the battens I have no idea what effect this will have - anyone have a similar problem? Any input would be much appreciated.

I have a 393 and no battens. While some may say battens help with sail shape, I do not feel they are critical. Beneteaus are driven more by the genny than by the main anyway.

Battens do help, however vertical battens in a furling main might be more problem than they are worth. That said, with the larger main and the smaller jib on the more modern rig actually can make the mainsail the larger driving force. This is always subject to debate. Running with the main only would create more weather helm.

I have an Oceanis41 with furling main. No issues with the vertical battens. I had removed them and the main leach started fluttering so I reinstalled them. it keeps the mainsail shape better with no fluttering. Rolls in and out easily. I had to readjust the halyard tension once but that was all. Had nothing to do with rolling up the sail. Only about how freely the bearings turned. Once the halyard was adjusted, it rolled in and out easily using my finger tips. I also always roll it in using a slight amount of out haul tension. Hope this helps.

Hi, I have a 361 and replaced main sail 3 years ago with one with vertical batten. Had problem the first year, returned the sail to Neil Pryde and they found out that the batten were too large. They have replaced them and everything works fine now.
