Am considering purchase of ericson 25+ 1984. Boat comes with newish mainsail, not sure how old sail is but if feels like it has substance to it, not thin and flimsy, it has a dutchman system. The headsail is roller furling and is a 150, sail is 3 years old, looks in new condition. I'm on west coast of florida, I'm a new sailor, I hear we generally have light winds here. Seller says he just furls the headsail as needed to make it a smaller sail and lowers main if too windy, instead of reefing the main (when he singlehands). Is this a decent sail inventory to keep me happy for a few years, is the 150 too big as the only headsail, or will roller reefing it be a reasonable way to give me options? Thanks.

Sail combo should work fine
The headsail on the 25+ is larger than I use in Clearwater, a short sail from you. It will be good for this area. I have a 130 headsail which works well. Years ago I had an Ericson 27 on Lake Michigan off of southern Wisc. with the same configuration you are considering. I believe the winds there are even lighter than here. The 150 handled well and as you say you can roll it up if the wind is to much. Learn to reef the main. You will have much better control than the headsail alone. I think that combination is very common in all light wind areas. If you are coastal cruising or day sailing it should work great. I have been told by my sailmaker nto to go hard upwind with a furled jib as it will stretch it since the stress points will change as it is furled. I have used this combo with very good results on L. Mich.
