The weather has really put a damper on sailing this year but we go anyway. Does your spouse sail in "all" weather...?????? Here's a pic from this years sailing photos sorry no nice sunsets or sunrise photos yet...

Bad Weather?

Does my spouse sail in all weather? Far from it! For her it has to be less than 15 knot winds, sunny with temperature approaching 80 degrees, and waves no higher than a couple of feet. If it's worse than this, I'm gonna hear about it.

Anything but perfect..

Anything but perfect weather is a "no go" for my spouse. Although we're daysailors with a modest 21' boat, if it's too gusty or threatening a possible shower, my spouse doesn't want to go(of course if I go alone up to where we keep the boat on these non-sailing days to sail alone or work on the boat, I'll get "you're never home" from her instead). Anything more than 10mph is too much for her and gusts past 15 is a no-no. I had to agree with her yesterday when the gusts appeared to go past 25 with steady wind a bit past 10. Even reefed, things got hairy pretty often and I headed in early to stave off a mutiny...Oh well, barbequing on the deck is fun in the afternoon too...

spouse and bad weather

Hello, My wife is a fair weather sailer. If the wind is 5-10 kts, and the temp 70-90, she loves to go. Add more wind (15+) and she's not so game. To be honest, if there is more than 20 kts of wind, I don't really want to be on the boat either (unless we're sailing downwind.). Barry

Barryl, I think it is time

to learn the value of deep reefing the sails. It lowers the center of effort and of course reduces the area. Your wife is right in finding fifteen uncomfortable, the strength is double the strength at ten.

Reef....

and reef often! When the wife and I began sailing together 5 years ago, my teacher (uncle) who was a very capable sailer in his day, had forgotten much (age and associated things). When the wind would blow hard all hell broke loose controlling the boat. Fortunately the Cal is a heavy good sailing vessel. However after reading about sail reefing, we can be out in 25 knot winds and the boat actually handles great with significantly reefed head and main sail. Turns into a pleasurable experience, high wind, semi rough seas and a flat boat (10+/- degree heel) Greg Barry, how is the sailing going so far? Yes I am still up in the yard. Weather slowed things substantially, however progress is going well now. Paint by monday...Please no rain

Sailing this year

Hi Greg, So far it's been a good season. Not great, but but good. I've been on the boat once or twice a week since we launched towards the end of April. We sailed to Captains Cove in Bridgeport for Memorial day, that was a lot of fun, and I want to sail to Northport for July 4. Good luck getting into the water soon. Regarding reefing, I reef when required, that's not the issue. When the wind is 20 kts in the sound, the waves can build, and going upwind is not pleasant. I don't mind that much, but at around 20 kts, sailing upwind starts to become more like work and less like fun. Barry
