Maine Boat Builders Show...

Hi All,
We traveled to Portland to see the Maine Boat Builders Show and got to see some of the boats Maine Sail and Roger Long were talking about. Simply gorgeous, not to be confused with Fort Gorges.
We talked with craftsmen and vendors until we got to the back corner of Portland Yacht Services. A line had formed at the steps leading to the deck of a 65' Alden Staysail Schooner "Lion's Whelp". What a beautiful restoration project. We poked around above and below imagining what it would be like at sea with children and grandchildren. Sitting in the cockpit was a young couple doing the same thing so I asked them to go halves on buying it. They just smiled back at the old man and I could feel that tug on my arm. Time to go.
After a meal and a long ride home I googled "Lion's Whelp" and got the rest of the story. This schooner was a family project just like the one I'm working on, only more zeros. http://www.cruisingworld.com/boats-...hip-to-take-a-family-a-roving-1000069833.html

Lion's Whelp is owned Phin Sprague and his brother Abbot. Phin & his wife Joanna own Portland Yacht Services where the show was held. My buddy Seth did the canvas on Lion's Whelp, she is a work of art. Sadly they have decided to sell her. She was under sconstruction there for nearly 6 years.

Did you get a chance to go on my friends down east boat by Jock Williams called Maisie McGoo? Simply one of the most beautifully finished boats I've seen in a long time. The galley sink probably cost more than my entire boat..

I know it's a power boat but this is one of the most amazing works of art I have seen in a while. I know the owner, one of my dad's best friends, and his taste is exceptional and his eye for quality and detail is un-parralleled. Only in Maine could a boat be built to his standards.

No we didn't. Being first-timers from away, we just viewed the exhibits like an art gallery. I did get some ideas for what we are doing. Next year we'll have questions. Here's a thumbail of Lion's Whelp.
