Here is new Vega owner from USA-Vega#1183. Question about main sheet traveler. Some owners move traveler astern before cockpit (Vega ALBION, VELOCIR), other move it forward before companion. Could some body let me know about experience and benefits with different traveler locations - I am going to replace old one in my Vega but not decided yet the best traveler location.Thank you.Tym.Vega #1183 BRIZO

The way the traveler is currently set up is the strongest configuration: end boom sheeting.I have a Harken 1250 windward traveler car on mine and like it so much, I put one on my other boat. I wouldn't put the traveler on the coach roof. In front of the companion way seems like it would be in the way. Tim

My traveler is in the forward end of the cockpit an is attached to
the boom about a foot forward of the end of the boom. It is Ok, but
barely. I onece saoiled some on a Vega about 1970 0 there abouts.
IT sheeted to the aft end of the cockpit to a traveler and had
roller reeffing. It also had reefing points in the upper part of the
sail. This worked fine as far as I am concerened. A few turns of
the boom shortened sail and the boom didn't lower enough to be a
problem. If deepr reffing was need we just tied in a reef but that
was seldom used with a roller Genney being used to shorten sail
everything ballanced just fine in most cases. Actually my Vega
sails really well on Genny alone for cruising so I often drop the
main and roll up the Jenny some and and sail on maybe taking a deep
reef in the main at my leisure. I have jiffy reefing I guess its
called but need to use it more to decide whether it's any better
than the roller reefing. I am not sailing enough theses days to
really now which I prefer. I don't think I would be comfortable with
a traveler in front of the hatch unless I put a stronger boom on the
boat. The one thats on there might be fine for that but there would
be a lot of strain on the boom with the sheeting point in the middle
of the boom??? Some people have moved the sheeting point and the
best thing would be to talk to them about that.

Hi Tym – If you are not an experienced sailor it is likely that at some time you will have an involuntary jibe. This is bad enough with the mainsheet slamming across behind the helmsman it is potentially very dangerous with the mainsheet just aft of the cabin and if on the coachroof the helmsman may have to stand up to deal with problems,

I personally like my mainsheet where the designer put it.

Mike
