Main sheet length

Hi there! I am extensively refurbishing an old
Vega, including new running rigging. How long is the 4-part, boom-end mounted
mainsheet? Thanks in advance.

Hi
Dale,

I'm
using about 45 to 50 feet of main sheet. It seems to be enough to let the boom
all the way out so that the main sail just touches the
spreaders without running out of line at the bottom of the block. I'm using
7/16 line.

Hi Dale, Not trying to be smart about this topic. But the length of the main
sheet depends on how much of it you want laying in the cockpit when the boom
is at it extreme end against the shrouds. Suggest you push the boom against
the shrouds with a line in the main sheet blocks and cut whatever length you
feel you need to use for control. Walt.

My two cents on the mainsheet length: I'm making up a new one for
Lealea and will be making it extra long for use when lowering the
mast. Long enough for sailing is not long enough for this purpose
and it is very easy to use the mainsheet, attached to the end of the
boom which is supported by the topping lift when lowering the mast.
This is of course assuming you have the tabernacle type mast step. I
feed the excess line into a bag attached to the bottom of the
traveler support beam so it's out of the way.

Of course you could use a seperate tackle for the purpose or, as I
once had to do when I had the mast halfway down and ran out of line,
yell for help! d;^)

Hi Chuck!

I received the newsletter - and thanks - but it is the October issue which I have already received. Is there a November issue? If so, I would sure like to have it!

Thanks,
