main sheet a maze

My main sheet is not set up correctly as the line goes from a padeye on the starboard side up to one of the three blocks on the boom, down to the traveler top pulley back up to the second of the three blocks on the boom, down to a single block on the port side, up to the third and last block on the boom down thru the botton pulley and out the fiddle. I am concerned about just rerouting the line to two pulleys on the boom fom the fiddle block on the traveller (looks like the original) as the traveller does not look formidable enough to handle the load. No matter how tightly I sheet in the boom cal always go higher to windward ( just a push from leeward. has anyone redone the traveller, main sheet set up on the hunter 30 1981 or simmilar?, any clues?

Don't know if this will help

but my H30 has also been modified. the traveller is on the cabin top, and the rig is more of a maze than yours. Wish I had a picture, but to give you an idea, we spent an hour or so (and a couple of beers) trying to figure out the purchase. Its either nine to one or eleven to one, depending on whether lines running to padeyes count. ANYway, the problem may possibly eminate from the fact that your fiddle is in the middle of the traveller, allowing any slack to operate on the boom angle. In my case, the starboard side is tied off to a padeye, and the control line comes out the port side block, and through a pinch cleat. Still, if your traveller is in the original location, you probably don't have the option to work from one side. would a vang help? Hugh

A picture

I have a picture of the mainsheet set-up on my old 1980 H30. Your set-up sound more like the way the mainsheet was rigged on the H27's of that era. Hope this helps - you may have to enlarge the photo to see the mainsheet.

H-30 main sheet attachment

There should be a fiddle block attached to the traveler which is mounted to a rail on the bridge deck (in front of the companion way). A 4:1 purchase is made by lines from the traveler to the 3 blocks attached to bales on the boom. On my boat the rail was a bit weak in the middle from lack of support underneath due to the cut out for the engine control panel. Several reinforceing pieces made from 1/4 inch by 1 inch aluminum strips mounted underneath the rail solved the problem. The arrangement is good for single hand control. Good Luck, Henry
