Hello - I recently bought a 1989 Cat 22 in good shape. However the main sail appears to be original. There are no tears and the seams appear to be sound. I basically a cruiser at heart and have no intentions of racing this boat right now. I can't afford a new main right now and was hoping to prolong the life of this sail by sending it to "Sail Care" for treatment with the LaMauney process (whatever that is). I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has used this company and knowing what your results were. Thanks for any info you can offer.......... Jack OB

Worked for Me

I sent my main and jib to SailCare a couple of years ago and was quite pleased with the results. The only negative was the process removed the anodizing from the main's aluminum headboard, but this is only cosmetic. They were very reasonable with repairs as well. I highly recommend them. You might want to also consider retrofitting full battens to the main (I'm not sure if they do this or not). I had mine done by a local sailmaker.

Sail Care get Thumbs Up from me

Jack, I bought a 1982 Catalina 25 last season and it had the original sails. Sent the main to Sail Care and they cleaned, and repaired it (some restiching, replacing numbers and stiching around them and insignia, a new foot and a new headboard for $270 or so, including shipping). I am well pleased! They also did a genoa on another boat for me some years back and it looked like a new sail also. With the price of sails, I think they provide a lot more (cruising)life for MUCH less money. I too would recommend retro fitting full battens--I didn't, wish I had.... Fred
