Sumner, et al, In the last race of the year it was a bit fun, but I did have some sail damage. The biggest issue is I need to replace the patch where the reef is as it tore a bit. I emails Sailrite and as usual they gave some great advice, but I am wondering what the best way to cut the sail cloth is for sewing. Can I just cut it or do I need to use a hot knife? I have a Harbor Freight hot knife that I use for trimming ropes (http://www.harborfreight.com/130-watt-heavy-duty-hot-knife-66182.html) and it has been great for that, but I am not sure it is appropriate for this. Below is what Jeff from Sailrite recommended which I am probably going to follow. Thoughts?
The Dacron seems a bit heavy, I would use 3 layers #100195 7.4oz Dacron. You would remove the old patches then install the replacement patches the same size as the old. You'll find all the patches on one side of the sail, the new patches should be placed on the same side, not opposite sides.
Use a #2 brass spur grommet #26309 which will require a #2 spur die set #18203.
Use V-92 thread #20204 with an Ultrafeed or other industrial machine, use V-69 #20203 with a home machine, needles size 18-20 and 16-18 respectively for the thread. Finally #659 seamstick.
