Main sail reefing

Can anyone provide some help on what the reefing configuration might be for the main on a 1990 Hunter Legend 35.5? UK Halsey just built us a new main and their representative could not figure out how the reefing lines should be run. The original main sail and the new main have two single line reefing points. The UK rep thinks that the lines were intended to run down to the base of the mast and back to the cockpit and there are blocks on the mast that would appear to accommodate this. However, the lines are not long enough to make it back to the cockpit. Unfortunately, we never had occasion to reef the sail during this last year of ownership. Thanks.

Your UK rep is correct. Each reefing point has two lines associated with it. One is used just for the clew of the main and is contained within the back section of the boom where is passes through an internal double floating block. It exits the sheave on the back of the boom, passes through the reef point on the leech and terminates at the bottom of the boom on a small sliding bail. The second line starts at the reef point on the luff goes through an eye on the mast at the gooseneck. Then through a block mounted in the sail track near the base of the mast and up into the boom. From there it turns the floating block and back to the gooseneck, down to a turning block at the mast base and back to the cockpit

We feel your pain...

the "double floating block" as described by Alan is one of the big problems as it imparts a huge amount of friction, especially if the lines are all original. Alan has written extensively on HOW he has downsized most of his control lines and if I'm not mistaken, has also modified the "internal cars" in the mast. HOW about another expose/article on updating the 35.5 rigging Alan? You ARE the man on this forum, and I mean that with most respect!

Thanks very much for the quick response. I will match the photo with the verbal description and see if I can walk myself through the set up. I think new lines will be needed. Do you have recommendations about the best compromise of price versus performance for new line?

35.5 Reef Line length

Alan et al - This has been a task that I've had sitting on the to-do list for some time, but haven't gotten around to yet. I'll admit that I'm being a bit lazy, but I'd like to get the lines, take them up and replace them in one trip. Was hoping to use the old lines to pull the new through. But I don't know the length that I need. Yes, I could go up to the boat, pull the old leaving messenger lines, measure them and then replace them, get the lines next time I'm back close to the boat store, head back to the boat and replace them. But if I knew the lengths, it'd make life SO much easier. So, any help? If you've replaced them, any chance that you have in your log/notes/invoices how long they were? I know that we're actually looking at 4 lines - forward/aft 1st/2nd reef. Thanks for the help. T J

If I could suggest...

...while you are about the reefing system, the outhaul is sorely lacking in purchase. I have upgraded my outhaul with spectra line and a 6:1 cascading internal system. Now when I need the draft decreased it can be easily done by anyone instead of the need for a deck gorilla. :)
